Pretty much every DVD player made is now progressive scan.

Check out the DVD benchmark at Secrets:

That is a very intensive test of many different DVD players. And very few high-end boutique players scored well.

Toshiba and Panasonic are good budget choices.

Wait for the new standard in DVD's to come out. This is the new HD-DVD and BLUERAY. Different companies will introduce one or the other, but both are esentially high definition DVD's. I think they will be introduced at the end of the year or begining of next year.

Progresive scan is only usable if you have a DTV - one that will accept 480p input signal. If your TV doesn't then you just have to tell the DVD player to output in interlaced mode. usually a switch on the DVD player, or doen in the menu.

You should notice improved picture quality.

Blank dual layer DVD-R's are still like 75-100 bucks for 15 of them. You think that HD DVD or Blu Ray are going to be cheap enough to offer in a year?

HD-DVD & BlueRay are possibly going to be released at CES in January but be warned, the technology will be initially expensive & the compatibility with exisiting DVD-Video discs has not been finalized.

At least DVD's are decent quality. I feel for those people with 1000's of VHS.
