As well all know, xmas is coming soon and I would like to have a tv under the tree for my dad this year. No bigger then 27", doesn't have to be flat, hd or anything like that. The only thing it has to do is work and play the occasional dvd. I've been checking out Futureshop and BestBuy.ca and there are a few possibilities, but since I don't know anything about tv's, I don't want to buy a crap shoot, and on the other hand, I don't want to spend a whole pay cheque on a tv that isn't for me.

Any recomendations? Good quality for under $300, any chance of that?

I bought a Prima 27" (I think) at Future Shop for $139, faux flat, at the beginning of the school year when I moved back into residence. Zach has the exact same television (it may be the 20" I can't remember off hand and the box is at home) Works great I love it, only thing I don't like about it is the converter is pretty ugly lol And if you lose it goodluck finding a universal remote that'll work with it, none of the others seem to wanna work with it I use the tv to play dvd's, vhs tapes, and play PS2

IMO stay away from RCA tv's...

Just my two cents.

I just bought 2 toshiba 27" 27a34 model at FS for $279 each. Very impressed with picture quality.

Usual suspects: Toshiba, JVC, Panasonic. You'll pay more for less features if you look at Hitachi or Sony and IMO you don't get any better picture...

^I agree.

I would say no to Advent or Prima.

I have the 20" Prima. Works good. Good for the price. The only gripe I have is about the S Video input. It is a pain to get to work so I just gave up.

The wifes parents have a 27" prima for the price can't complain.. but after owning a 27" flat Screen Sony Vega it drives me nuts cause the quality isn't as good on the rounder tubes.

Chadxton - Personal experience it does the trick and is a good price for the tv. I haven't had any problems with it at all, especially if its only gonna be used for television and watching movies.

Decent TV with component, s-video and composite inputs for freat prices.....Philips. You can buy it at Walmart around your neck of the woods and the return policy is pretty liberal. We sell Philips out west here and I bought one for my mom for chrsitmas last year and I am quite impressed with the picture quality of standard cable and dvd through component inputs is just about as good as my 32" I'art.
