Questions about wages?

Does a company HAVE to pay you for training? I work for a security company that is not going to pay people for 3-4 hours worth of training. Are they allowed to do that? Thanks..

Check with your provincial Ministry of Employment Standards branch. Either you have to have the course before you are employed or they are giving you the course at no charge. In either case, if the training is a prerequisite for employment, you have to pay for it. So if they are offering it to you in lieu of paying you for the time, take the training.

No they don't. What company are you working for? Usually in the contract you sign when they hire you there is a clause that they can bring you in (and make you pay) for any training they feel is necessary for the job. Just be happy you aren't paying for it.

I believe if you are just hired and need training its the companies choice however once completed a 90day probationary period if there is training that is business related they do have to pay.

I've been working for the company for 1 year and 2 months... Now they want to give everyone "Basic Handcuff Training" and said they're not paying anyone for it. I don't think they can do that since i've been there for so long... can they? By your post i'd say no.

Um, no. If handcuff training is part of your daily job then that training must be paid time.

So I do have to be paid then? That's what I thought... I thought since i've been there for well over a year they have to pay me.. I'm not willing to do training for free. Sears security PAYS you your first day working for the company for handcuff training. (I dont work for sears btw.... would rather not mention the company I work for..)

I would still contact your local employment standards branch, but here in BC, that would be 100% a paid and provided training seminar.
