Ok so basically, a lot of us students are sick of dealing with the slow speed never working internet access thats offered by the residence. And most of these people except me have wireless in their laptops.

We got the bright idea that we would get a hookup of our own so that we're no longer relying on the school network internet, we'll have our own. (someone did it last year and it worked well) So one main computer (mine) and whoever else that wants access will get the access through wireless.

My question, is whats the difference between the Rogers Express package and Extreme package? I dont understand what they mean by 324kbps vs 800kbps. Yes I am aware that its a speed,(kilobytes per second, so how fast data is transferred) but I dont understand how they're explaining it. Like we'll only have a maximum of 324kbps speed if we get the express package, or 800kbps with the extreme package. Is that correct?

They want about $44.95 a month for the express and the same for Extreme only with the extreme you need to pay $99.95 extra for the modem.

Is anyone else subscribed with Rogers (i'm aware that rogers sucks and all but because everything else in this building is rogers we get a student discount with them and its all we can get. I'm not sure if Bell could bring us DSL thats also something I will look into.

But anyway, can anyone put any input into this? Keep in mind we're college/university students and dont wanna pay a whole lot of money.

Well I'm getting Rogers Extreme in about 2 weeks.

I'm not really sure of your question though.

You want to know the difference between the two but you already mentioned it.

Extreme has 5Mbps download, and 800kbps upload.
Express has 3Mbps download, and 384kbps upload.

Meaning... the Extreme is 2/3 faster downloading and more than twice as fast uploading. (This is all theoretical maximumx, but either way, the Extreme will be noticeably faster)

Otherwise it's basically the same thing. Wire comes from the wall to your modem, modem connect to router or your PC.

Sorry but I don't know how to explain it any better.

(of course the ammount of email addy's and web space are different, but those are fairly obvious)

If I were sharing it with a bunch of people I'd be sure the get the Extreme.

Ok whats the better deal then lol I'm more so looking for more information on it and if its a smart idea. Considering the internet here RARELY EVER works... They have so many problems with it and they've been having the same problems for years. University Institute of Technology you'd think they would know how to fix this issue

I'm not sharin it with a bunch I'm only sharin it with a max of 4 ppl where 3 ppl will be accessing it wireless and I am the 4th person. At this moment there's 3 ppl including me. I would get it for myself but I cannot afford $50 a month ontop of my other bills. So with 3 ppl it brings it to around $15 a month.

Probably the Extreme... but it all depends on what you call "the better deal"

I mean, the Express is cheaper. But is it really worth saving the $10 a month if you can't do anything because of the shared bandwidth?

But then again, if it's only 3-4 people sharing the connection then you're probably ok with the Express.

Also, what do you want to do with it? Because if you have 2 people streaming a movie at the same time off of the Express it will probably cause problems.

The way I read what you put though is that it will be shared. Meaning you will probably also be sharing the bill. In that case I'd totally get the Extreme.

I'd say, the lower package is probably enough, unless like 3 outta the 4 do extreme gaming and need every lil bit of speed possible.

We run 3 pc's off out shaw cable which i think is rated at 3300kb down and who knows what up, probably 256 or 384.

I've downloaded at an all time high of about 700kb/s but usually average 200-400 from decent sites, microsoft and download.com

So just from experience it should be enough to get you by, but if you've got some big gamers that absolutely need the best, then maybe the extreme might be worthwhile.

For the general user though, upstream isn't a huge deal, unless you run a website and or have needs to send large files out or attempt to run a server off your internet which probably violates the user agreement you will/would have to sign.

Your going to pay the same price wether you have "express" or "extreme, for extreme you buy the 80/100$ modem and you get 5 meg service for the same price as the 3 meg service, so your best off having everyone split on the 5 meg modem it's like 100$ I think divide that by however many people there are.. You will still pay 44.95$ regardless of what package u have unless it's lite which u don't want. With Extreem the 800kb upstream will give you 100 k/sec upload and download you should get about 575k/sec sometimes u will see a full 6 meg service no problem.

The only draw back on the Extreme is like Chizzer said, payin for the modem. I am not gonna shell out $80 and no one will split that price either. And yeah the whole idea of sharing it is to share the bill cuz i cant afford to do it myself.

And one webcams with her bf back home and uses msn. I play Warcraft 3 online and download lots of Things.. and the other guy downloads Things and watches streaming video.

Its actually a lot worse than yours believe it or not. It works maybe a total of 2 hours a day. Its screwing a lot of people over because they cannot check their campus email to check for replies from their professors, get assignments and do assignments that require internet research.

How come normal and extreme are the same price? I am not complaining but is that the final price or is extreme going to go up to $69 a month in a few months? I am going to be getting Extreme once I move out in 2-3 months and I can't wait. I heard in Aurora (Ont) they have 9 MB/sec Internet access!
