You might be in a sticky situation, your insurance might charge that you giving her the keys was implied permission to drive the car. report it ASAP as a theft, I'd have left it where it sat, and reported it then to be honest, then let the cops sort it out.

If you want to give her dad the chance to pay for it, go and get some estimates... some very high estimates that are itemized, then take them to him and see his reaction.

and of course you need to report it, you can be charged for not reporting an accident, not only that, you can both be charged for leaving the scene of an accident. do that part at least now, so you don't get into any more trouble.

I am extremely uncertain at this point. If I do call the police, it is unlikely that I will recover any money since her father would be unwilling to pay when charges have already been filed. I am also hearing that if I gave someone my keys, from a legal perspective, I am unable to charge them. I'm not too sure if this makes any sense, considering the fact that I never gave her consent to drive the vehicle. I have to know what I am doing before I approach the police. On the contrary, if I do not report this to the cops, I face the possibility of the repair costs not being reimbursed.

So you are now thinking that to cover your costs of repair it is alright to fraud the insurance company by telling them that you were driving? What if this girl decides to go to the police herself and claim some kind of injury? You are screwed no matter which way it goes. The only out for you is if this father decides to do the right thing or not. It's a hard lesson to learn but now it's either you take the red pill or the blue pill. Get your butt into the police station and deal with the aftermath.

I never said that! The last thing I want is for the insurance to get involved.
Can this not be considered theft, considering she drove the car, in addition to giving the keys to other people to drive it? I've taken down the names of the other two people that drove my car.

Probably wont make you feel better but I too had someone crash my car. My friend put it over a guard rail as I watched from another car I was driving (long story). I told my friend to pay my deductable and we were cool.

Two years later, I find out that I have major front end damage that wasnt spotted, or just ignored, by the autobody shop that fixed it.

My point, cars are too much money to let someone off easy. File the report immediately.

But my question remains unanswered, is it not theft to drive the car and pass the keys around to people I don't know, without my consent?

when you are not at fault get your insurance involved !!!

you gave her your keys to get warm . not to drive the car . OR for her to let other drive it.

file a report. tell her to never talk to you again . and pay yoru deductible. that is your best and ONLY option.
