I've got a 2002 model and it's treated me well. I've put a PSI Powerbox in it which gives me 110 HP and about 180 Lbs of Torque. A little nicer than the stock 90 horse.
It is definately great on Gas and I've never had a problem finding a diesel station.
I've had to take it in because of a broken window clip but I'm told that's a typical probelm with this model. Any warranty work needed was absolutely hasstle free.
Any questions feel free to email me.

I drove the 2004 yesterday. Nice driving car. new engine from Germany that produces 110 hp. Just as quick as my Civic hatch but with quicker shifts. 5,000 red line versus 7200. Plus I had a salesperson next to me so I couldn't rev it passed 3.5. She kept reminding me. damn.
Drove a 2002 Passat TDI when I was in Europe last year. Nice driving car. 1000k on a single tank. Drop the clutch and she peels.
Only qualm about them are noticeable electronic quirks, like the door ajar light coming on when there was no door ajar. And I could smell the windsheild washer fluid come into the cabin with all windows rolled up.
