Is either power acoustik or Pyle a good brand for an in dash DVD player?

 

I am interested in knowing this to...

 

If you like your audio from the bottom of the barrel then sure. It is good for it's price point. Personally I would rather have a damn good cd player from the worst of the mid fi guys (cough I will pick on Clarion...again personal opinion) before I would take anything from the bottom of the audio barrel. But to each his own, if it is right for your application that is what counts.

 

The thing with those is that you have a good chance of them freezing on you, beeing bugy, beeing slow and just plain unreliable.

If you're going to send the time and money to have something shipped from the States, you'd better make sure it's not a high breakdown item. DVD player...high breakdown probability with this namebrand. The biggest issues are: customs; transit costs; downtime and frustration.
I'm sure that you can find a cheap Pioneer, Clarion or Panasonic with most of those options for about the same price in Canada.

On a different note...PLEASE help us to work with our economy, not America's. Recessionary times call for patriotism, not just what seems like the bottom line.
When I look at importing items from the States, I also need to include: customs fees; extra waiting time at the border; currency differences and credit card fees to exchange the money. I would expect to pay an extra 30%.

 

^^^ x100000 Do not take a chance on buying cheap gear from the states. I have purchased a couple of items, but never again. Shipping is not bad until it hits the border, then you see the real cost of shipping. Bought a cap from California for $50 + $20 shipping. Not bad considering it would have cost me $120 here. Well then UPS shows up at the door and asks for another $40 for customs and duty fees. So now it is $110 and with the exchange rate at the time ended up around the $140 mark, so if I had just got it here would have had warranty and saved $20. Same thing with an EQ I got from states, customs and duty fees were almost as much as I paid for it to begin with. With the amount of shady deals around on the net I would prefer to just deal with someone local. Keep your hard earned money in Canada.

 

Shipping is only a problem if you chose UPS. Chose USPS and all you paye is the +-15% taxe you would pay here anyway. However one has to add about 25% to the price because of the exchange rate.

SQMonster has a very good point, high probbility of problems with that unit, it's going to be a pain to have that fixed.

I actually found the pioneer unit cheeper here in Canada. Look around here before going to the states. MR2NR has some great prices.
