Best 300w sub set up

Ok, so basically I'm looking to install a sub in my Mustang gt. My older enclosure does not fit in the trunk so I'm planning on ditching that, and keeping the amp I'm using. (gonna sell the old subs too)

The amp is a Rockford Fosgate p300.1
150rms X 4 ohm. MONO And 300rms x 2 Ohm. MONO
Birth certificate rms was in the 400's

I'm looking for decent Sq, and good SPL (for the size) so I'm guessing a properly tuned ported box and a sub with good S.Q qualities would be a good bet. I'm strapped for space though, I still want SOME use of my trunk space.

What single 12" (or 10") sub, and enclosure would you recommend for this installation if the budget was $400 Canadian, enclosure included. (sources to buy are appreciated and e-bay is an option.)

If space is an issue have you considered a sealed enclosure? Or do you prefer the sound of ported?

I've considered sealed... I like the tightness and sq , But i don't know if a sealed 10 or 12 with 300rms is going to pound enough for my liking...

I have quite a bit of room in the trunk... But my bassworx box is just to big! its almost 2 cu ft and its just a big square... to tall, and bulky.

The custom box that you are going to need is what is going to kill you on your budget. Can you make it yourself? If yes, then you have a much broader choice of subwoofers available to you. Your amp is not a powerhouse by any means, it is going to be the limiting factor for overall output no matter what the sub and box are going to be. I would definitely choose a single 12" sub and a slot port type of enclosure in order to have any hope of getting reasonably loud with this little amount of power. Down the road you can always throw a bigger amp into the picture. Choose the sub for that application knowing that it will do it's best with what it has now.

Well, to simplify this... What single sub can I wire to a 2 ohm load, which will perform well with 400 watts RMS powering it?

And a source to buy it.

thx.

honestly, watch fs/bb fliers for a sale on infinity kappa subs(12.2)...... cant get the perfects easily anymore, too bad. those kappas can be had for under $200.00 on sale quite often, are 350-400w rms 1400w peak. they are more a sq. sub and are quite forgiving in the abuse department
just my 2cents,good luck.

Can you go to a couple of local shops to see what they have to offer for sound and price?

You'll be looking for a dual 4 ohm sub that's designed for a smaller ported box.

futureshop had a sale on boxing week on a 10" pioneer sub dual 4 ohm. my buddy bought it for his saab, and we have 250rms going to it. i'm surprised how well it sounds. its in a 0.85 cube sealed enclosure.

I'd suggest an Alpine TypeS. Has an RMS of 300W, Max of 900, so throwing 400W at it on occasion shouldn't pose too much of a problem. BestBuy carries Alpine, their regular price on this unit is $150.
Go to the Alpine website to check out the recommended enclosure dimensions. Perhaps that'll work for you.
