mixing wood

ok sooooo a piece for the vent of the box i was putting together got damaged, so i was wondering if using 3/4'' plywood to cut a substitute would be a good idea or if i should just go to home depot and try to get another piece of MDF. the piece i used i got for free and if i go there i don't want to have to buy a whole sheet if i only need a small piece. also, do you guys think 39hz is too high of a frequency to tune the box or should i just buy a little more mdf and lower it to 35 or so

the plywood will work temperarly, but i wouldnt keep it in there for long. tuning freq. is a user dependant thing, it all depends on the music you listen to really. i'd say your safe with a 39hz tuning, but you might lose a bit of lower end thump

I would not use plywood.... Go to the cut shop at homedepot. I am sure they will have a piece for you and if not you can usually buy "handy panels" which are 2' by 2'.

thats awesome, i had no idea they had those. the mdf i used was from a job site where they were building cabinets into a wall in a house, but the guys said they bought too much so i too a sheet. and i'm just worried about my lower end bass like mike said. right now my prefab box is ok, and i know when i play a 45 hz tone things get REALLY loud, so i figure my box is tuned somwhere around there. i was thinking if i go for somewhere in the low 40's to mid 30's i'd get to use a 40 hz tone to get that loud and get better low end extension, then again its my first shot at a box so i'm taking it as a learning experience

oh, and i was gonna try and coat the ply with something because i heard it can come apart, so i guess thats whats wrong with plywood, but since you resin your boxes sx4life it probably doesn't matter for you

But this does not stop it from splitting... It only coats the outside.

first off it WONT split if you pre drill, second my last box had NO screws was only brad nails, glue and resin... strong as hell and u dont split anything with brads. I would personally only use the mdf though, because it seems most logical to me!

Yes but my opinion is this.... There is enough flex in plywood that it could split/weaken just from the air pressure inside the box... But that's just my opinion.
