first time fiberglassing - i have ?'s

hey all.. ok.. first off.. it's in my 2000 dakota club cab, and the rear floor is as even as rita macneils thighs.. (sorry for the visual lol) .. I'm looking at building a simple straight up sealed enclosure with 2 mtx 8000 series 10" subs.

the box will be around 42" long x 14" deep x approx 6-7" tall (these aren't firm #'s .. just something to start the 'idea/design' ball rolling)

now.. basically what i'm looking to do is use fibreglass for the bottom of the enclosure, so it takes on the shape of the floor.

here is how i think it should be done.. (in my mind)
1) tape of entire floor area to be covered with glass/resin (not sure resin is the correct name)

2) should i use glassing material or that sweatshirt material? (remember.. it's not needing to be stretched.. only take the shape of the floor)

3) cut the 4 sides from mdf (front, rear, left and right) and as close as possible match shape of the floor for the area it's over, fasten left and right sides and front and rear together, place in truck

4) lay in glass material/sweatshirt material and staple to inside of mdf... start laying on the liquid

5) 2.. 3 .. layers? how many coats will be needed?

6) when all dry.. can the hardened bottom be covered with something like rubberized rocker guard or something to dampen or insulate from the metal floor and from the subs (i don't want the thing to end up sounding hollow)

any corrections, tips, proper namings .. or anything else you can think of to add would be awesome...

thank's alot for your help... hope i'm not too far off with my guessing

rob

not a bad start... first though, sweatshirt material, or fleece (whats commonly used) is ONLY used to get the disired shap of a curvy surface, not for any sort of structure... always use Fiberglass mat or cloth for foundation molds... you could use a rubber spray on the bottom with out affecting the sound of the box at all..

There's many many fiberglass tutorials out there, head over to www.the12volt.com, http://glassmanscustomforum.com/v-we...n/bb/index.php, there you should find more info than you care to read..

regards, Mark

Crash - as stated, you have exactly the right idea. tape off the floor, put up the walls, and lay in the matte. 4-6 layers is lots.

When my brother had a Dak CC we were going to go into the sidepanels under the back windows. lots of space in there for 10s... we were going to do 15s

thanks muchly for the links.. replies.. and tips!

i guess, as with everying, it's daunting until you've done it. figured i'd cover all the bases before i go to town.

the key to the setup is: i am planning on retaining partial use of the rear area. I'd done this with my previous box that housed 2 mtx black gold 10" in a sealed enclosure.. they didn't need as much space as the cast 8000's want.

Just a tip:

After you've laid the glass to the frame.....screw the top panel (baffle) on.

That'll help stop the warping that happens during the curing process, keep everything square, and save some grief later on.
