8. i can hear mine with 2, but some people think even 2 is too much. some people think 1 is too much and you sould be able to get all you need from the music with 6x9s or a full range speaker. if anything start with one, then if you feel you need more add another, or find someone with 1 and someone with 2 and see if they'll let you sit in their cars and make your decision based on that. its all about personal preference

I have a 12" alpine type x with a 1000w amp running through it, i'm torn between getting another though since right now with the bass all the way up on the sub you can't hear the music over the rattle sometimes. i'm just looking for some opinions as I definitely want more bass it's just i'm worried I won't be able to hear the music

WHEN my 2 12" massive audio's where running great with my DD amp at full tilt with my subs maxed i couldnt hear the music at all.. and i was just running 1000watts rms.

it all depends on the subs. the vehicle. the power and the type of box.

did you find that annoying? like would you have preferred to be able to listen to the music at least?

all depends. i ended up upgrading the front stage to have 4 speakers fully amplified and it was loud as hell. soo it turned out great. but i listen to alot of rap soo i want my bass and i want it loud lol.

but i turned to SQ now :P if i can get a 2nd car ill do spl in that one again hehehe

to me enough is never enough. the fun thing about more power and more cone area is that you can allways turn it down. as of when you just dont have enough you allways want to crank and then it leads to clipping and poof.

Any sub that'll handle 750-1500 watts in a ported box is enough to make a rearview fall off. You can adjust the bass anyways. If you can't hear your music either turn down the power to the sub or get new speakers. My ear would crackle sometimes with 1 12" and 1500W.

so are you saying I shouldn't because it could make my rearview fall off? I really don't like the idea of the subs having a negative impact on my car

ps : at dany, i'm the exact same way lol. I have good speakers so it should be enough to still here the music. i'm more concerned about the well-being of my car lol.

my van is in great condition even after all that beating and flexing. the only this i have to do once in a while is to screw back some screws on the rear panels. but most cars dont even have any anyway. i would be more worried about your rear hatch if it doesnt have any sound deadning
