What is the best USB hard drive to use?
Hey guys... Thats my first post here.
I just got myself an Alpine IVA W505 and I`m thinking to go with an usb hdd for media storage that will be mounted most likely in glove compartment.
Are those portable mini hard drives that are powered through usb will work with the unit*? If yes what are the options, I dont need much since it will be only music and no video.
And the last question how do they handle constant vibration? My car is being lowered so ride will be a harsh one, especially in Toronto.
I guess thats all for now.
Than for any help

you need to find a solid state hard drive, as theres no moving parts and are vibration proof.
any hardrive with a spinning disk will have problems down the road.
these are still expensive, and ud be cheaper to get just a thumb drive
they range from 1GB to 32GB and maybe even more by now
Future Shop: Computer Add-Ons: USB Drives: GXT 32GB USB 2.0 Pendrive (GXT-32GPD)
thats a 32 gig, theyve gotten very cheap, might even be able to get awaya with a few smaller ones if u needed too...anyways, good luck with it

hey thanx for the quick reply.
Actually makes sense that over time hdd might malfunction due to vibration, i went through 3 hard drives on my pc in 2 years which was never moved off the table. I can imagine what could happen in car.
So I will just go with a flash drive which is so much easier to mount, just tuck it in behind the dashboard

if you got the Alpine Iva w505 deck then the best medica solution would be to get a ipod classic.. you'll have virtually complete controll of it through your deck. holds lots of crap and it doubles as an ipod believe it or not.
I have that very same deck and after trying out a usb drive i found that ipod was really the only way to go.

Dont really expect any difference tho just for ipod being a large drive that holds more information.
the difference is your album art would show up on the screen on the deck aswell. Also it allows you to sort thru your music by artist, album or song title and prolly other ways i havnt bothered to notice. for me the usb just sorted by way of the title. /shrug
