How do i adjust the gain and line level?

Just installed my components in the front with a amp to the stock hu. Also used a inline adapter, it has 2 dials on it. How do i adjust this and the gain on my amp so they work well together? I have installed

quick and easy is to play a very quiet piece of music,( a zero bit track is best ) get things as loud as possible . when you hear hiss turn it back. your deck should only be able to be turned up no louder than it would be to blow some stuff. if a passenger cranked the volume no worries and no distortion as your max volume set through your amp wont allow it

play with both and see which gives you the most hiss. i would assume the adapter would give the most noise

Are the gain adjustments on the adapter for line in and line out? Or for left & right out? I'd just turn down all your gains, then turn your radio to a fairly high setting. then turn up the adapter settings to a decent level and adjust the amp gain to match. You can use a DMM to check the voltage of your RCA's. this will help to know where about to adjust your amp....
