I have very limited vertical space in my trunk (06 cobalt). About the tallest box I can fit in through the back seat is 15", and the sub is 15 1/2 tall.
So im either going to have to put an angle on the front of the box, and try to keep it firing toward the back, or face it up and have no real problem in calculating volume/making sure the magnet will not hit the bottom of the box...

i know of none

 

They face the sub towards the rear because the sounds revurbs off the rear, and heads to the front. Which in turn makes it louder.
You can fire up, but it won't be as loud.
Although I've never even sat in a coalt, so I don't know what the trunk looks like.
I say try it anyways, either way you will have bass. It just won't be as loud.

 

The disadvantage, if applicable is called "Woofer Sag" look that up, if I remember correctly, there was a quite in depth thread over on www.the12volt.com regarding this that the caculations needed to determine if it would be a problem with the subs you are using...

Basically it all depends on the woofer being used, and if it will perform to it's fullest if mounted firing up...

allready have a box now with it facing up, problem with the cobalt trunk is it is pretty big but the opening in the back is very small and the seats folded back is only slightly bigger, aside from building the box in the trunk, Ill either have to put an angle on the box, or face it up.
Im leaning to putting an angle on the box, I got all the tools for woodworking and none of this should be a real problem.

I could even assemble it in the trunk haha, that would be a perfect theft prevention solution

traditionally, the better trunk vehicles have had either the enclosure firing rearward (here it is important to make sure there is room between the enclosure and rear wall and the enclosure and trunk to keep from muffling the reverberation) or they fire forward with a baffle that seals of the rear of the trunk altogether.

if you mount firing rearward, try playing with a bit of corner boundary loading witht the port (if in a ported enclosure) firing 90 degrees opposite the driver.
