So I have two amps installed in my car. One under the passenger seat and one in the trunk. They have been working great until today. I installed a new box in the trunk and noticed the amp was not powered up. I checked the fuse and it was blown. The amp under the passenger seat is still fine. I bought some fuses and have blown 5 after trying to figure out the issue.

Any ideas why it is doing this all of a sudden?

try upping the fuse....if its a 20A, upgrade to a 30A. The subs may need more juice. I had to do it to mine. I went from four 20's to four 50's and its been fine since.

 

Well it is strange because the amp was fine before, same sub. I took the sub out, made a new box, hooked it up and noticed amp was dead.

I just thought about something I may have done that was stupid. While the sub was out I left the speaker wires exposed. Could they cause a problem if they were to touch or even contact metal. They may have done both at cetain times .

try undoing that amp so you have one amp then see if thefuse goes off

Yeah, fuses are a there for a reason. That reason is to protect electronics from drawing too much current. They don't tell you to put in 20A fuses for no reason.

 

If you've shorted the wires or they touched ground, that could kill an amp.

Usually it just blows a fuse and that protects the amp from damage. If you have oversized fuses, the amp will die before the fuse goes.

Most high end amps have built in protection, so you can't hurt them.

I'd suggest opening up the amp, usually if its taken a big enough hit to blow fuses again and again, you'll see and smell the damaged components or burnt traces.

The little black boxes come with smoke inside and the trick is to Not let the smoke out....

 

Well it is definately the amp. I have put my other amp in the same place and it works fine.

Would the exposed speaker wires really do damage enough th ruin the amp? Is there anything I can do?
