Aftermarket HU wiring - speaker trouble?
Aftermarket HU wiring - speaker trouble?
Just finished hooking up a new HU for my boy - 1998 Jeep Cherokee - Pioneer DEH P5000UB. Bought a wiring harness and things went very well. Tested the unit before we put the dash back together and everything was fine. Mounted the HU, put the dash back together - great. An hour later my boy comes home, no sound from the speakers. Puzzled. The only thing I can't remember is if there was two ground wires. I know there was one for sure on the connector that has the power wires etc - this was soldered to the main vehicle ground wire. Is there a ground wire that needs to be grounded on the connector that has all of the speaker wires. Could this be my problem? Appreciate any advice before taking dash etc apart again.

hmm did you connect black to black on the Pioneer plug to the factory harness adapter? I believe there should only be one ground on the harness.
You might have to take out the deck and check all the connections, this should be easy. There are two metal things (dunno what they are called) that came with the Pioneer deck. Just slide both of them in each side and pull towards you, and the deck should come out. Then you can look at all the wires again.

Just finished looking again - Pioneer plug ground wire soldered to main vehicle ground. (ground wire the old HU was connected to) this ground wire appears to be an independent ground? On the wiring harness, the two pin connectors that were used, nothing is grounded?
Do give us a bit more information to help troubleshoot:
Does the unit turn on? in other words is the at least power?
Did you blow a fuse in the power line or in the fuse box?
Is there no sound in all modes? CD? AMFM etc?
And, what impedence are the speakers? If they are factory, 2 ohm speakers, that would explain why it worked for a while. At least until it got turned up.
And, if thats the case, and it didn't blow a fuse, it probably blew the Amp IC.

I doubt that. Most IC Power amps have short circuit protection.
I also used a zip tie on the factory pin connector to eliminate the pin connector possibly coming loose.
Thanks for all of the quick replies - hopefully we can solve this.

The unit does power up, no fuses were blown and sound works in all modes. The speakers are factory - upgraded speakers are in the mail. When we lose the sound, there continues to be power. The last time the speakers quit, I took apart the connector that has all of the speaker wires and plugged back in with nothing (no sound) I then blew into both sides of the pin connector, plugged back in and the sound was back? Coincidence? Could I have a wiring problem in the sleeve between the door and vehicle?

But lets start with it working again.
So you blew on the connector and it works.. Great.. Now just leave it like that, working... Dont put anything back together...play some music at low volume. What does the sound from each speaker sound like? Clear? Distorted? Increase the volume and listen again? Is there one speaker that is more distorted? Maybe this one is blown. How long does it play before shutting down? WHat happens if you wiggle the connector? Try to eliminate or confirm this connector being the problem.
If it is the problem then find out why. If not then move on.
If just one speaker wire is shorting, or if with the new head unit you have overpowered a stock speaker and melted the insulation in the voicecoil you may now be shorting out that speaker resulting in shutdown of the new HU.
Try connecting just one speaker at a time. Measure its impedance with a digital ohmeter it should be 3-4 ohms or more.. If it is 2 ohms it may be giving your HU a problem.
Not sure what else to suggest.
