Hey guys, I had my stereo done at BestBuy 2 years ago when I didn't know anything about car audio. Time has come to transfer them to my new car.

They are two 10-inch Alpine Type-R's with dual voice coils (2ohm+2ohm) coupled to a Alpine MRP M1000 Monoblock amp. The amp makes 1000w RMS @ 2ohms, so I want to make sure they're wired right.

I put them in my room and wired exactly how they were in the car to show you guys. I used the crutchfield diagrams and it doesn't look like its 2ohms (looks like 0.5)

How should I wire these for 2ohms?

 

You got it right on the money there. You have the coils wired in parallel so 2 / 2 = 1 ohm at each sub. Then you have those wires in series so 1 + 1 = 2 ohms at the amp. Set the gain properly and enjoy.

Did anyone check out Crutchfield's diagram? It looks different then that

 

They show the coils in series and the drivers in parallel....electrically it ends up the same, purists will debate the effect of having the drivers in series....

Looks like I need a new amplifier. The alpine overheats in 30 minutes and shuts down. All grounds and wirings are done right, gains are only 1/4 up, yet it still cuts.

Any brand reccomendations over 1000w RMS?

 

What kind of budget for the amp, a kwality one or a quality amp? What head unit are you using and what guage of wire on the power ground side of things?

 

I dunno, maybe its because im tired or my eyes are deceiving me in some way... but i dont think that is right. The coils are supposed to be bridged between the positive and the negative and i dont see that happening. It looks like you have bridged the subs as a collective unit instead. Follow the above diagram precisely before hooking up the amp again. Wire the subs in series to 4 ohms each and run 2 separate (+ and -) wires for each sub directly to the amp or connect them before the amp to simplify things meaning join both +'s together, and both -'s together and then just connect the single + and - to the amp. The nominal impedance should be 2 ohms.

If its shutting down and overheating its most likely is wired far below the impedance capacity of the amp.

 

BigRed- I think it may be possible that it was already wired up right, however there should be no harm in adapting my scheme to match crutchfield, check my pics.

MR2NR- The HU is an Alpine 9886 with 4v pre-outs. I just want an amp with a little more headroom. My current Alpine MRP-M1000 is rated 1000wrms @ 2ohms.

I was looking at some HiFonics, Soundstreams and Kickers (Kicker 08ZX1500.1), what do you think? I want to steer clear of stuff like power acoustik & boss. Shouldn't be a problem running the 500wrms subs off a 1500wrms amp for example, wont kill them right?

BTW the wiring is for illustrative purposes, it works, but the rear wires are not what I'll be using in the car (will use 12ga)

 

If you've wired them as described above the amp should work perfectly fine for your application. You will be running the system at 2 ohms, which means the amp will put out 1000w between the subs (500 ea).

If the amp is not going into protect or overheating, just leave it alone and enjoy the music
