One of the bolt holes for the speaker terminals on my Soundstream LWII 5.830 is stripped. Not the bolt(allen key type) itself, but the "nut" like part that holds the bolt down on the wire. Its plastic from what I see.

What options do I have to fix it?
- I've thought of using plumbers tape to "widen" the threads on the bolt?
- A slightly larger bolt?( but where do you get one?)
- Soldering the wire in (Do NOT want to do this, but it'll work I guess)

Any better/other suggestions?

 

dude that sucks, id try contacting soundstream and asking them for a replacement one and how much itll cost. im sure this happens alot so they could be able to help you! make sure to put in your product name

 

I never thought of that dude. Thanks. The only possible problem is that all the terminals are on one two level "bar". So all 10 connections for the speakers are in the same piece of plastic. I would need to open the amp up to wire/change it out.. Scary for me...
Since we couldn't figure it out to our satisfaction, we've just been running both the rears on a single right channel .. Not too SQ.
I'll give some hard thought to that bro, that would be the proper fix. Thanks

 

just try a slightly bigger bolt, maybe one with a coarse thread

 

Well who knows, maybe they'll take the amp back and do it right and send it back to you? Even if you have to do it yourself I'm sure there is lots of electronics or audio repair stores who might be able to do it

 

Two things might work:

Go to Home Hardware or someplace (not Princess Auto. Love it, but not for this) and see if you can get a bigger grub screw that fits. I was missing a couple of the screws on a Cadence amp I just bought and found two that were just fine--shorter (but not too short) and black, but I figure the electrons don't give a crap and neither do I.

But the female connectors weren't stripped. However during the process I found one that was, just as you say. I haven't looked for a bigger grub screw yet, but I found a nice little bolt just the right size in one of the tobacco tins full of nuts 'n bolts I got from my Dad and it works a treat. Looks, not the greatest...but I'm pretty much not looking back there when I'm driving, anyway.

Fine ideas guys thanks. I sent Soundstream an email yesterday. For right now I'm just gonna wait and see what they have to say or offer.
I also found another tip, "just tap it" but I don't own a tap and die set, so thats out. I'm sure a bigger screw(with a coarse thread ) is a cheaper and better option to try first.

I didnt know those are called grub screws!! Good to know, thanks, I had no clue what to call them when I asked..lol
" You know, the little stubby screws on amps" I can just see the confusion on the Homedepot workers face now..HUH??

If Soundstream doesnt come through with an email today, I'll check out the local stores this weekend for a slightly bigger grub screw. I used my hand me down ' bucket oh screws ' years ago...lol
