That’s the ones with the one and a half din openings right?
You can get after market head units that are 1.5din size but they haven’t been updated in years ..most I think still have cassettes.
Best bet is to get whatever single din deck you want and get the dash adapter for it. You need a dash adapter\dash kit regardless.

and maybe this (but I havent needed an antenna adapter in a long time.

Yuli, forget the modules. You'll end up spending money for a glorified door chime/accessory wire... If the GM car doesn't have Bose or OnStar, run a wire to the radio fuse in the car's fuse panel. That will give you the switched 12+ you need for acc. Then just a regular wiring harness, not a module, for the rest. The only circuit that gets affected by not using the module is the data signal that comes through for acc and diagnostics via the radio display and the door chime. bestkits.com offers the GMCO if you really wanna spend 150 bones for a door chime and 10 mins of work. Metraonline.com has one as well.

Oh, and your radio won't stay on for the usual couple minutes after the car's been shut off, it'll just go back to the regular style we've been used to for decades where the radio shuts off on the key and back on when its either in "run" or "acc".

now im more lost than ever........

i guess my question was what do i do with the factory deck? do i toss it? do i keep it?

i thought all the main functions were in the deck, as in it was the car computer?? is it not?

so to reformulate my question.......

Option 1: relocate the factory unit - how? what parts do i need?

Option 2: take the factory unit and throw it at the old lady in the wheelchair off of my balcony - what functions will i loose and what will i need for the aftermarket unit to work?

Option 2 sounds good LOL Here's why:

The radio is a display, that's it's function. Error codes can be read from the radio, but the tech's also have the tools to read it without the radio. The door chime is actually played through the door speakers, so when you remove the radio, it won't work. Also:

The door pin signal from the ECM is fed to the radio via the same data wire that gets converted to 12+acc in the module, so when you remove the radio or don't use a module, you loose that little timer feature. The things you lose with removing the factory HU is the ability to read trouble codes via the radio display, the door chime, and the timed radio off. That's it. The module will convert the data wire to give you 12+ for acc, and it also maintains the radio timer so the deck will stay on for a bit before you open a door, and the module is also a speaker, so instead of running the door chime through the door speakers, it comes from the module in the dash. By just tossing the deck at the old lady and using the wire to the fuse panel/regular wire harness trick, you won't have these features, but you have a failure-proof (even fused) 12+acc wire and more money in your pocket to buy other fun things

what about keeping the original and tying into the wire harness to have your aftermarket deck in a hidden location then you would maintain the look

just an idea
