Subwoofer Question

Hello everyone. My friend and i where looking at some subs for him to purchase we where looking at Mtx, Powerbass, Focal, Alpine, Ed and Re but he asked me a question that was a little confusing he asked why Mtx Powerbass and Focal any sell subs that can go down to 30Hz while Alpine, Ed and Re can go down to 25Hz so my question is why do Mtx, powerbass and Focal only go to 30Hz?

You probably looked at frequency response figure, which doesn't say a lot (depending on how truthfull the manufacturer is). You should find out the T/S specs of the sub, this will give you more info on how low the sub is able to go. It's about the box and the alignment, if its ported then porting frequency...

They don't just magically stop at that frequency at all. It is where the manufacturer chose to rate them from. That "spec" is like telling you that the sub is blue or green. What will make the difference is the box it is placed in.

Oh okay, Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the Freq responds so i thought that the sub just drops off at that freq. Thanks for clearing that up and sorry for such a newb question

If you are interested in more detailed info, try downloading WinISD pro software(it's free) and toying around with any sub in it's database. There are also numerous guides on how to use it around the net. It's fun.

except you were already correct

If a sub has an FS of 30hz I wouldn't expect to get extention below 25hz even with a ported box tuned low.... such a sub just can't go flat to 20hz !!!!

Well see my buddy listens to mostly rap so he wants a sub that can get low, i already told him that most music doesn't get down to 20Hz maybe just test songs but that about it. And him seeing Mtx, Powerbass and Focal having a FS of 30Hz he turned right away and started looking at Alpine, Ed and Re. So i guess he will have to decide what he wants.

Thanks again for all the replies
