Aftermarket Underlay/ sound deadening?
Aftermarket Underlay/ sound deadening?
I have a Safari van with somewhat agressive all terrain tires that make alot of road noise. I have removed the carpet and found the underlay was molded, shredded, and sogging wet, so it had to come out. Now i installed my stereo, ran all wires, etc. Now without underlay i decided i would give it a shot and see what happens.....
Turns out the cabin noise is REDICULOUS. No big deal... 10 mins of work I have the interior out and carpet removed again. A few beers, and 3 hours of laying on 2 layers of dynomat like sound deadener on the floor, and 4 layers over wheelwells. Toss interior back in and go for a highway cruise... next day...lol
Noise is definatly Less.... but maybe only 25% less though. Still abnoxious!!...
Now I need some good recommendations of what I should use for underlay. The factory GM stuff was OK, but not great with my tires thats for sure. Can i use a thick bedding foam, or some sort of insulating material that won't cost and arm and leg to buy?
I defiantly want as little noise as possible as I've installed a nice front stage and want to enjoy it!

if you rhino lined under the van that would work pretty welll , or used the second skin spectrum sludge inside on your floor that stuffs pretty dynomite , otherwise if u wanted to go as cheap as posible go to home depot and see what they have as for insulating solutions
I like the rhinoliner. i was thinking to get the underneath of my wheelwells done with that! maybe an extra thick coat would help out...
As for HD, should i just get some R12 fiberglass and just glue it to my carpet? lol.. sounds bad but might get the job done...
I was thinking a bed or furniture manufacturer, or even fabricland might have some nice sheets of 2" foam?

You can do spot treatment with sound deadening, but if you're trying to block road noise you need a decoupling layer.
I like Cascade VB4 for flat spots and VB3 for complex angles.
I think Second Skin LuxuryLiner is cheaper, but I have no experience with it. Also Dynapad is the same idea.

perfect thanks for the responses guys! I will try HD first as a cheap local solution.. If it doesn't pass my tests, then I will search for the closed cell neoprene foam solution.. seems logical and would act like underlay.
I'm trying to stay away from buying companies sound damping material for my floor as i noticed maybe 25% less noise when i applied the dynomat, but it also lowered the frequency and sounds like a constant bass note on the highway... damn
