Hey all

This might be a dumb question but in my internet travels I ran into a bunch of home audio (8 ohm) speakers that come in a diy front tower set up and I like the look of the speakers. They are good quality and there is enough to do my whole truck.

I am wondering if I can switch the cross-overs to car audio and find some amps that will run 8 ohm speakers.

Any thoughts

 

All amps will run 8 ohm speakers. Either use the crossovers that are in the towers or make your own to the individual driver's impedence, which may not be 8 ohms.

You'll just have to buy amps with plenty more power @4ohms than u want @8ohms. I've heard of guys doing this before, but never actually listened to a set up.

 

The old F#1 status speakers were ripped straight from home audio, with the exception of the tweeter. So it can be done.

 

there is often very little difference between high end home and car audio drivers. You could use them as is with the existing cross over. Do you intend to use the same cabinet? Keep in mind most home speakers are bass reflex (ported) for low frequency extention. If you will be using a subwoofer you can use a much smaller cabinet (about hafl size or less internal volume) However for in door use without a cabinet the better car speakers have higher Q than their designed for box home audio brothers.

As mentioned, they weill play half as loud as thier 4 ohm versions. Now.. why are these so special to you? what brand/model are they? what kind of drivers do they have?

 

They were made by Scanspeak, but mearly a home audio driver. The specs were a bit different. All around the driver was introduced to be a car driver from Alpine, yet were really revelator drivers from Scan. The tweeters were a revelator tweeter redesigned for a slim platform, and form factor to be able to fit in a car. The drivers axis was changed as well, for a more up close listening experience.. this is what can standout besides the impedance from a home driver to a car driver, not to mention the glues and materials to withstand car environments as well.

I believe you can get a similar tweeter from scan with the same platform now, with different specs of course

 

Yes, I think it's the R2004 or R3004, can't remember.

I was under the impression that the mid in that setup was barely touched aside from the weatherproofing you mentioned. But that's another discussion entirely.

 

I've thought about doing an automotive setup with some JVC woodcone stuff. They make a car audio version that was never available in N America. Their home audio stuff maxes out at 4" I think and they do have a wood dome tweeter. The speakers really slant to more of a natural instrument and vocal reproduction than my musical tastes, but sound great in a more acoustic style.

 

Don't worry about the impedance or the difference in power the speakers are going to get compared to 4ohm. Reality is that it is barely audible and probably only 1 or 2 clicks of the volume dial different.
