I can say from experience that Sony Xplod, well, sucks. Atleast their amps do. (Sony seems to have hit the nail on the head with the "Xplod" moniker).
If the amp was under $50 then maybe it'd be acceptable.
Anyway, perhaps I'm being too harsh (but probably not). There are a ton of good amps in the for sale section alone here at a fraction of the original price. Just do some research (and be a bit patient). Search the site for opinions. For $250, you could be very happy with what can be found out there.

They're all good

I wasnt a big fan of sony in the past but all of their new lines are CEA Rated and all i have to say is, their are much more expensive, well known names out their that do not carry this stamp of approval. If you want a decent monoblock from them i suggest the gt-r line. At least you know what you are exactly getting and i dont think many people will fight the fact that they are CEA rated. Another decent line to consider is phoenix gold.

I didnt mind my old sony 760w amp. But I only paid $75 for it. If you are interested in sony, go to pawn shop and buy not Crappy Tire...MUCH cheaper.

A LOT more can be had for $250. For example my friend just sold my old Alpine MRD-M1005 for $200 in MINT shape. Thats 1000wrms @ 2ohm for $200...decent deal.

Another couple good brands to look out for, kenwood's new line and excelon, even a lower end hifonics amp could run you about 200 bucks with the right shopping. Panasonic has just come out with a new monoblock that seems to be really decent for the price. Just do some looking around for a bit. All these amps or also CEA rated, so a good buy if you ask me.
