As like many, I am running a JBL 1200.1 that does not have a built-in subsonic filter. I am thinking of building a ported box for my JLW6 v.2 12", but I am deathly afraid of "hurting" the woofer. Many people have given me mixed answers to this question. Here are a few responses:

- You need a subsonic filter to protect the woofer from the lower end frequencies. Just go out and get an Harrison FMod.
- You do not need one becuase most songs won't play below a certain frequency level that could possibly affect the woofer, so don't worry about it. Besides that an FMod doesn't do sqaut!
- It isn't REALLY necessary but it's good to have!?!

So what's the deal? I am going to keep my JL sub until I die and don't want to hurt it in the long-run. How do I go about porting my woofer without hurting it's longevity? Do I need a subsonic filter? If so, what should go out and buy?

If all of this fails then I will just build a typical sealed enclosure. However, I am looking for some more SPL from this single sub setup.

Basically, if you tune below 35 Hz and you don't go crazy with bass tests, it'll be fine without a subsonic filter ... Provided it's not in some massive box ...
