How important is the size of your grounding wire?

My power wires are 4 awg but then for my ground i just ran 2 14 awg wires back to the battery and twisted there ends together. I have no problems with it running 1 amp but im afraid that once i install my second amp this ground wont be enough.

Any suggestions?

 

try breathing through a 50 foot garden hose for 1 minute....


A ground should be at LEAST the same size as power wire

 

Electricity is a algebra equation, what you do to one side you must do to the other. Having a ground too small equates to you going into Subway, eating a footlong sub and then having your butt cheeks sewn together, get the drift?

I ran my ground back to my battery because when i used a 12V tester on a couple of place in my trunk that i scraped away the paint it showed i didnt have a ground. Am i missing something here? Does the way a car grounds itself differ from an ordinary grounding system?

 

Question. For my ground I took a hand grinder and took the paint off one side of the rear dash assembly and bolted my ground to the completely sanded side. Is this good enough? Ive been using it for the last couple months..whats the ideal connection for a ground?

 

find a spot with thick metal, my favourite spot is the seat belt anchor bolt below the rear seat...it has yet to fail me. The problem with most cars built today is the amount of insulation and joining points they have. In the old days, the car was a shell sitting on a big frame, today the car is the frame, and parts of the frame are somewhat isolated from other parts by adhesives, cements, rubber insulators and other less than perfect conductors. Anyway, try that seat belt bolt, and make sure you clean the paint off and sand or grind it to bare metal. Use a large ring terminal, and at least 4awg wire as short as possible.
