i`ve been looking around for some subs this week and here are my choices.
fosgate t1 in a custom box 2ohm
kaption clv212;2x12"dvc 2ohm
kaption 1X12" svc 4ohm.

my amp is a kaption d-700.1 the sales dude at e.h.r says my best bet is the clv212. he says for my amp 2X12" would be better than one 12 like the fosgate t1. what do you guys think?

 

Depends on your budget and the amount of real estate that you want to give up for the box as well. You have tons of options available to you if you are going with 2 subs.

 

well i was told that is better to go with a pair of 300 rms 12`s, than 1 600 rms 12 even though it is a better quality sub. any truth to that?

 

No, it is all about the box, then the proper match of sub to box and finally, how it is used.

 

^^definately true; here is my question: all things being equal, does 2 subs at half the power perform better than a single sub at 2x the power? My belief is yes, because they don't have to "over exert" themselves to play at a decent level. This assumes sufficient power into each of the two subs.

 

Unless the single sub is operating well within it's thermal barrier. If any sub is approaching it's limits, that is a different story.

 

see this is the delema i`m in. its ok to hook up my amp and test a hundred premade box`s, but how do you test a sub in a box that hasen`t been designed yet. over this past week i`ve been to 6 different places, and each one has a more colorfull story. honestly i still can`t get a straight answer. can a long throw 700 watt sub produce more bass than 2 short throw 350 watt subs? is it all about the box?

Are you looking for more bass, or better bass?
2 subs in twice as big a box will certainly produce more bass, and perhaps they won't be straining as hard. However at the same price, you're likely going to get less powerful subs, or subs that don't sound as nice, or some other sacrifice.

see thats the thing too. alot of shops are pushing those generic box`s. i don`t understand how you can tune a pre-made box to a sub? one guy in mississauga said its possible. well i guess i gotta keep shoppin.

 

If they are prefab boxes with ports that can be adjusted length wise or if you want to put your own ports in by cutting new holes, then you can tune it.
Here is how I went about setting up my subs:
1) decided on how much space I had available.
2) Used Win ISD to get a good idea of performance with that box size using all available subs within my budget.
3) based on the plots, i narrowed my decision down to top 3 subs.
4) looked at pricing, reliability, availability, specifications and cosmetics.
5) Chose the subwoofer to use.
6)Had a reputable shop build the box to my specifications and cut extra pieces of mdf for tuning should I need them.As it turned out, the box was perfect and the sound exactly as I expected.
