Just got my new truck for work. It's a 2008 Chevy Express 1500. The factory deck will have to go. No CD player, no aux jack, no RDS, no HD radio, nothing. I'd like to install the Nextar 990C ive been using in my old truck for the last couple years. It has a USB jack for thumb drives, and a slot for SD cards. Really handy for my podcasts and audiobooks.

Do I really need to spend a lot of money on fancy harnesses with chime replacement etc? Should I leave the factory deck and mount my aftermarket elsewhere? Maybe run seperate speakers, or have a relay switch the speakers from one deck to the other.

Has anybody else had to deal with these GM LAN issues?

 

Id like to know this aswell. Been itching to do somthing to my 07'. Was close to making up a dash kit, throwing some 6.5" comps up front, a 12" enclosure/lock box between the front seats (closed cab) but been delayed. Damn aftermarket for work trucks. Allways at the back of the line :P lol

 

hey man... i beleive the unit you need for integration is like teh gmco , just a newwer version. um i know it gets rid of bose if you got it . and it allows you to keep the onstar if you got it , but the gmcol29 is the unit you need if you dont have bose or onstar. we just had a huge discussion of the im portance of the gmco. with bose or onstar there are a few diff ones.

It may not need a GMCO some of the 08's have moved on to the LAN series. Even more compicated than the GMCO. I'll check work tomorrow. Just need to know if the truck has BOSE or ONSTAR or both.

 

Well, mine is a work truck so it won't be getting amps or subs. I did remove the stock radio from the dash to make room for my aftermarket deck. I didn't remove the OEM deck, I just moved it shelf in the back of the truck. It's still connected, I need it to run the warning/signal chimes through the left front speaker. I think it will even generate a RAP lead for the new deck, as it has provisions for an amplified antenna lead fed from the deck.

I'm saving about $140 bucks by keeping the old deck and not buying the replacement module....

 

No Onstar or Bose for me, BASE model FURY!! shes a tank.. With two way remote start/paging :P

 

you can relocate the factory deck but it will not generate the RAP or accesory for you. those features are controlled by class 2 data which means your aftermarket deck can't use the information that the stock deck uses to turn on or stay on till the door is closed. You will have to use accesory from somewhere else, and the ignition harness is no use cause it's low current and low voltage not enough to run a deck not to mention that the passlock and ignition share the same wire. YOu will need to use a relay. I highly suggest you take it to a certified installer.

 

Well, I've been looking at the schematics for other GM-LAN deck equipped vehicles from an online source that my library uses. Namely the 2006 Impala. It has an amplified rear window antenna. It gets it's power from the factory deck. This would imply that the OEM deck decodes the databus to turn the antenna on and off (RAP). I have to insert one of the unused speaker pins into that position and give it a try. I'll have to leave the factory deck on, but I can set it to 0 volume so as to make no noise. I'll probably isolate it with a relay if this RAP signal is present.

BTW the 2008 is different than the 2007 Express...

 

if it has no onstar and no bose. it says you need gmcol29. i have no clue what these do and if they act as the gmco. would be something to look into.

 

that would be nice if you could post the .pdf. I have a feeling that the bcm is what actually sends the data signal. the deck decods for it self and the antenna is different. The amplifed systems(bose) are also class 2 data and cannot be triggered with a relay. I hope you get lucky though!
