I read in 24 Hours that the accident was at 176 and 88th and their Mazda turned left in front of a semi truck passing through the intersection but indicated the Mazda was at fault. Is that true?

For Igor's accident just to clear up a few things.

A) The cars were not racing
B) It was a white, not red, mercedes (CLK convertable)

What happened was the white mercedes flew past my friend (roughly 150 km/h). Few seconds later the viper (Igor) flew past my friend and caught up to the mercedes and it was clear the mercedes wasn't accelerating instead just going a steady speed (as speeding). I usually go between 100 and 120 on this stretch, so it's not uncommon (it's two lanes, straight and long). Igor tried to show off in his viper by revving up his engine and using the engine break to get that "nice" exhaust sound. As every racer knows, you don't use engine breaks at high speeds otherwise you lose control (my friend's dad has a few race cars and loves the sport). Igor used the engine break and downshifted, (possibly mis shifted) and his tail lost control (he did this while driving beside the mercedes, not passing or catching up), he hit the media as his car swirved to the left, flipped over, hit two cars, flipped back over the media and landed in the right lane.

 

Brutal. Sounds like maybe he caught 2nd when trying to go into 4th from 5th and then locked up the rear tires. Too bad he's left behind a young son and presumably a wife. From what I hear, Vipers are a pretty hairy car to control. I guess even airbags weren't enough to save him.
