Oct 4 Kingston "BATTLE OF THE BOXES"
as for SPL TV.. you talk to Yuli on that one and ask why he didn't come....
I'm pretty sure that the success of a show is NOT dictated by whether or not 1 specific person shows up... but whatever...
There were pictures (hell, even the Alpine Hummer and boat were there) ... I'm just not sure who has them..

everytime you make it out to a show around here we consider it a success.

So where the hell are the pictures???
So what are you telling me here ... SPL in Ontario has been funded this year by people or various locations and shops? There's a secret millionaire I don't know about that drives a yellow Aveo?
100% of shows were set up, produced and funded by people who held/hosted/ran them.
it's funny isnt it? People in charge of IASCA and DB Drag end up working with motels, plazas and variouse other parking lot locations to hold shows.
There are some shops who do host events, but with very minimal financial investement. Can't blame them really. Actually I'd like to thank them for providing the space, sometimes free of charge.
Davis at Selective Sound is the man who's been down with the program for some years now. Aside from him, I dont really know any shops in the GTA that would say "yah you can use this whole parking lot for whatever" and not ask for a penny in return.

And if no shop is putting money into these events, but they're handing out their business cards and selling products while there, what the hell is going on ...
sanction fee + judge fee = $1000
trophies = $300-$400
give aways = $200-$300
so say $1700. Doesnt seem like much to a shop but imagine their reaction when you tell them "yah it will cost about $1700 to do a one day show, but dont worry, you will make it back".
then there are also noise bylaw concerns and permit concerns.
to break even on a $1700 investment (forget making money) you'd need to charge $55 entry fee and have 30 entries.
last season we hardly ever went over 30 entries with only a $25 fee to a 2x show.
when a shop is exposed to a scenario like that, it doesnt even appear like a good long term investment either. Not like there are 100 people at the show, only 30 and that's on a good day. It even gets worse when 15 of those 30 run gear that the shop doesnt sell or even ever heard of.
but it doesnt end there. say one of the "regular guys" approaches the shop and sayd "can you get me amp X" that's in the car doing 155's?? Shop says "yah I can", they look up the cost, add their mark up, tell the customer and that customer has a heart attack when he hears "$1800 for the american bass 500.1".
Or the customer might ask for something equivalent. But the reaction will be about the same when he/she hears how much an equivalent peice of equipment from a main stream brand name will cost.
This is not a shop's fault. It all comes back to the mindset of individuals who want to win without any investment or effort. And there are many of those. Or those who have won already in their mind because they have a "5,000 watt system", and are not willing to face the reality by possibly coming dead last at a show. Eventhough "the shop I got this at says it hits 150/160/170/180/+ db's".
