It is perfectly legal to make backup copies of DVDs or any other copyrighted material for that matter, as long as it is for personal use, and you are the owner of the original copy.

I think that Tim Probably just didn't take the time to read the whole post, and assumed it had to do with illegal copying of copyrighted material.

Lending (or, in legal terms "Distributing") a COPY of any any copywritten material is illegal. Lending (again, "distributing") an ORIGINAL and letting that person copy it is NOT illegal.

I will maintain (to stir the pot) that copyright laws only apply if you are recieving some form of payment in exchange for the copywritten material.....

The laws are so grey you pretty much have to look at individual cases.. but there is certainly no law against retaining information for personal use...

The lawyers can argue what is considered personal and what is considered payment... for insance if I copy someone a DVD as a 'favour' the situation could be construed differently then if it was a 'gift'...

How often do you guys think the average person who isnt doing anything really wrong gets put into a situation where the facts are construed against them.... its not too often...

You were right, and what I do is totally legal. I do not hand out copies to friends, I do not steal them, I do not sell them. I make a copy of what I purchased legally to ensure I always have a good copy incase one gets damaged.

It's common not to believe me for some, I'm not hurt by it. It's solely someone elses decision to believe me or not. And to some sometimes its other things. I sorted it out with someone else got what I needed its all good, thanks though Drew.

Yeah I don't lend out my DVD's to often as when I tend to get them back there's usually something wrong with them, or if I know my friend has a burner I won't do it especially for certain movies. I will flat out tell them to go rent or buy it themself the film deserves the support. [img]graemlins/thumb.gif[/img]

That and my family sometimes tends to lose thing's or forget they have let a friend borrow it to watch it, couple years ago my brother in law actually lost his goodfella's dvd to this day he still can't find out where it is. Even after a move from Ottawa to Whitby. Or if there's a messy room sometimes they'll get stepped on kicked around or scratched, however I tend to take very good care of my things.
