Well, I believe there is a few reasons why only 20 people show up at some of these Car Audio events.
Aside from this being a "Canadian" site and many of the users being scattered from across Canada, as DUMPED said a very small portion of people are actually interested in competing. I have a ton of audio in my car, but car audio competitions is not the motivating factor of why I added it to my ride.
Add the 'clique' feel that this forum creates between people makes it uneasy for an outsider to partake or feel comfortable.
Events aren't free. Free always does better, but someone needs to pay. Economy is in the dumper and people don't want to spend money on a car audio event, let alone anything else these days. Lets not forget, shops don't do it because they love the sport. The do it for exposure and sales, a show is a marketing tool to drum up business.
There isn't much reach to bring new people into the sport from outside of this forum, atleast from what I see. Its also a very niche hobby which sadly is taking a beating.
Saturated... Just like all these show & shines or for instance, CSCS. Once you've been to a CSCS event in 2005, you really have no reason to go up until this point. The cars are the same, racing is the same, all the same. Now the hardcore group of people will always stay loyal and attend but people who paid to be entertained may not stick with it. Who watches the same movie every weekend at a $20 expense?
The forum is here to talk car audio. Its an outlet to promote shows, drum up business for advertisers and a free resource for people who are interested in Car Audio.
15,000 users is pretty awesome

The site was created by a guy named Wade Galloway. (he also used to own/sell the B-Quiet line of sound deadener but I believe he has since sold that business)
The user that I can see in the database who has registered the furthest back was in 2000.
The database didn't exactly transition over very smoothly when it got upgraded to different software so some of these items are hard to find out (users got deleted, the dates they joined got messed up...etc etc).
Basically, from what I can see, everyone before 2000 is listed as having been registered in 1969. (16 users like this)
Some of the names there I recognize and others I don't.. for those of you who may...
Dukk is one of them
Wade
Pete (aka fatwhacker)
Logan Lundy
Shaugn Murley (smurley I believe)
Dereck Waller (dwvw)
Ettore Casagrande Jr.
Tom (forget his previous ID)
This is all I can gather for now just taking a quick peek back in the user listings for the board

Tom is still here, he PM'd me a while ago when I was looking for something... he's gotten out of the audio business though.
Logan stops by once in a while too.
The others... well they took it really hard when ownership changed hands so they've chosen not to participate in the board any more.

I believe Tom's original name was Tominator (unless we're talking about a different Tom) . . . he is around still, but he does have a different user ID
I also think that ettore made his exit a few years before the board changed hands, I could be wrong on that, but I know I haven't seen him for a long time.

Yeah, I think Tom had a different name as well though.. although i can't remember for the life of me what it is.
You're also correct about Ettore... which is too bad because he had a lot of technical knowledge that I really miss around here
