1.5ohm load on 2ohm rated class D amp?
I'm thinking about running 2 JL 8w7 subs on my Alpine MRD-M500 amp. Will this work without any issues, or am I asking for problems? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide!

well there are a couple points, if the speakers are lower than manuf. spec so there could be drama, if the the speakers run slightly higher impedance than no issues. If the amp simply runs hotter with the lower impedance no drama... till you turn it all the way up that is, if the amp senses less than 2 ohms they may simply shut down.

I've never used JL. What are the impedances of their VCs? I've heard of guys doing similar things and it working. I'd imagine it's gonna cause extra stress on the amp and shorten its life or possibly cause real damage. It'd probably pound real good while it did work. If it did work. What kind of protection do the MRDs have? It may stop real damage, but any shop would advise against it.

Even if the amp could theoretically handle the 1.5 ohm load, I'm afraid the amp would go into protection mode.
Maybe I should just go with 2 RE Audio SRX 10" subs. They are rated at 300 watts RMS, have a pulp cone, high Xmax and efficiency rating (18mm and 85.3db). I think they may be a good match made in SQ heaven for my amp, which is rated at ~580 watts RMS @ 2ohms.
Take a look and let me know what you think:
Technical Specifications - RE AUDIO
Needless to say, the RE's would be MUCH easier on my already light wallet! lol

I think I will get better SQ from 2 RE SRX's in a sealed box.
Do most SQ competitors stick with sealed boxes?

Johnvroom put it exactly how it's going to be. So basically you won't know til you try it.
If you don't want to try the trial and error approach, check out the new Alpine Type R 8's coming out soon. Rated at 350rms, 14mm Xmax, supposed to have excellent SQ, and obviously way cheaper than a w7, they may be just what you're looking for.

We used a set of RE SRX 12s in the largest RE recommended ported box , (1.5cuft pr sub at 38hz) sending about 400wrms to each sub. Both my brother and I were impressed with the sound and output for the overall cost.
We originally tried sealed and were a little dissapointed with the output but the sound WAS good.
Still have them and the ported box kicking around for emergency backups
I'd stick with a 2 ohm load anyhow, regardless of the subs you choose, just to play it safe with your new gear.
