12' Alpine type R subs question
 

Hello

Would this amp power it to the full potential since they need 1200 watts rms ?

Get a 1500W amp for 1200W RMS.

So...for two of those subs, they are dual 4 ohm models and their final load impedance will be either 1 ohm, 4ohms, or 16 ohms. Therefore, you need to get an amp that puts out 1200watts (approx) at any of those impedances in order to fully drive the subs. The amp you have chosen maxes out at 2ohms, and you get only 800 watts at 4ohms...so it's not the optimal amp for these subs....however, alpine does make those subs in dual 2 ohm versions which would give you a final load of 2ohms for the pair and would make the amp appropriate for the subs...so easy answer is to get the dual 2 ohm versions of the subs. Can't answer if the excelon is better than the alpine, but i can tell you the alpine's are pretty damn good subs and these new ones should be even better than the last model which i owned.

Ive used MTX in the past and liked them a lot so would this amp be better than that kenwood one ? or could you suggest a better cheaper one that has 1200rms.

Yes, those are the subs...dual 2 ohm versions. Mtx makes good amps from my experience, but the kenwood excelon are good too, some people don't like kenwood amps, but i've had no issues with them over the years. As far as other brands, the kenwoods are about as cheap as you can get for decent brand name amp...pioneer is relatively cheap too.

Okay so if I use the MTX amp on those 2ohm ones will I be getting the full 1200RMS? Since im upgrading my subs and amp do I need a better Wiring kit or battery to run the system?

No...that mtx is 1200 watts at 1 ohm which is good for the first subs (dual 4ohm versions) and with 1200 rms watts you need a minimum of 4 awg wire, 0awg would be a good idea so you can add more later if you choose, plus there's less voltage drop with bigger wire which means more juice from your amp.

Get a 1500W @ 1 ohm amp.
