Can you use just any type of wire for the big three? I have some spare 4 guage sitting at home. Would this be appropriate? Also would be using copper wire instead of say the silver tinsel type (or is it aluminum?) make a difference? I'd like to do the big three considering i have a bit of dim going down right now.

Was just looking at my cars stock wiring job for the big 3. Its 8 guage for sure. Has two power wires from the battery, one goes below the engine to some unknown location and the other to a box. Then there are two ground wires from the battery, one is short and attaches to the wheel well and the other disapears to some spot under the engine. Can't even see how the alternator attaches to the system from what I can remember.

The one going below the motor is going to your starter so you can leave that one alone. The one going to the box is likely going to the under-hood fuse panel, and from there back to the alternator. The two grounds are simple, one is going to the chassis and the other is grounding the engine block.
