Clarion vs Kenwood 4-ch Amp
#11
I don't need to be heard 10 blocks away. I just need to annoy ppl in the car and maybe a metre away . I think I'll just get the rears too all at once since the crappy route isn't a wise one. How about this q?
Also, since the HU has it's own internal amp, is it possible to use that just for the rears since the fronts will be amplified by the external amp?

One of the things I really like about the Excelon decks is how easy it is to shut off the internal amp.....KW actually recommends that you do so if you are using external amps so the deck can use all the available power to pump up the RCA outputs. Once it's shut off the signal from the RCAs will rise to the 4 or 5 volt (depending on model #) listed for the deck but the signal will not clip.....as soon as the deck senses clipping it will cut off the signal at that point, making it much easier to set amp gains etc.......
If you don't carry passengers in the rear very often don't worry about them for now.....get your front stage and sub in and setup properly and listen to it like that first.
To answer the q the internal amp will power the rears just fine, for the reasons listed above you would be better off (SQ wise) finding a small (25-30W/channel) amp to hook up to the rear RCAs and using that instead....
