internally vs externally fused amps

Just had a random question jump into my head.

What is the difference/purpose of fusing an amp internally vs fusing it externally?

Do know why I started thinking about it, just randomly came to mind.

Most higher powered amps (over 1KW) are fused externally. Really there is not that much difference except extra insurance.

Even with internally fused amps, you still need to protect the power wire dedicated for the amp; say if you have multiple amps running off a distribution block.

Some (I should say most) externally fused amps have protection circuitry in case there is a short on the speaker leads, which wouldn't be protected by the external fuse.
