Hey guys quick question.

I have a cheap sony mono amp rated at
900RMS at 2 ohm (50Hz, 1% THD+N 14.4V)
600RMS at 4 ohm(20hz-200hz,1%THD+N 14.4V)
Rated CEA 2006 - so i assume fairly accurate ratings.

Sub i just ordered is a Alpine type R 1243D rated at 600RMS

Question is which Sub would be better option
4ohm model wired to 2ohm and overpowered by 300RMS
or
2ohm model wired to 4ohm and powered at 600RMS.

theres always debates on better to overpower or better to underpower. wondering if anyone would have a clear answer.

Having an amp MUCH bigger than you speaker is fine, AS LONG as you don't overpower it. BUT if you are heavy handed and cant resist turning it up all the way... go for the 600 ... in fact do it anyway it is smarter and it shouldn't be expensive.

the type r will handle 900rms no problem if the sony amp makes that

I went ahead and ordered the 4 ohm. Hopefully your right about sub being rated higher. I do have low expectations from the Sony but 125 bucks new was hard to pay more for something less powerful.

I dont usually go very loud , I just have no bass in the current setup.

I'll update the thread if I fry the sub for future reference for anyone else.

putting 900 watts into a 600RMS speaker will blow it up sooner than later PERIOD. Now you (and everyone who operates your stereo) will have to be sure to not put too much power into the speaker. Many do this successfully many do not.

if he keeps the power clean he shouldent have a problem though i mean.. i ran a re audio 35.1 @ 1ohm on a single type r 10 in a pretty large box and all i did was rip a glue joint ( hit a 25hz tone by accident.. woops!) so.. he should be fine! i think

900 clean watts> 600 watt speaker

I have ALWAYS done it as well and have never blown a woofer, but I dont thump loud for long
