Power Out
#22
1- make sure the amp is getting the power it needs: checking connection tightness is good, (and yeah your amp is in the 4 gauge range (probably) ( http://www.canadiancaraudio.com/cableinfo.html )) also is your cars voltage dipping (lights dimming) with bass hits?
2- Your amp should be able to drive the speaker load so I don't believe that to be an issue
3- you may need more amplifier power as 500 JL watts into 2 speakers it's only 250w each which is plenty for most but your definition of "crisp" may be more like "freakin loud".
4- your description doesn't sound like a busted amp (is it new or new to you?)

I think there is only 2 lights on a JL amp. Power and Protect (green and red, respectively). OP, correct me if I'm wrong. I suspect wiring is the key here and you won't see the protect light come on at all. I suggested the "Big Three" as an add-on to your wiring change, as proper power delivery is key. Adding an amp (or more electrical load in general) will increase overall load on your electrical system/alternator, and upgrading the factory ground/power wires helps to make power flow more efficiently. JohnVroom has mentioned dimming lights, and if you see them dim when the bass hits, it will 100% confirm your power delivery problem.

Depending how many feet the 8 awg is,and the quality etc, it may be ok. IMO 500 wrms is the stopping point for 8 awg 10 ft and under. That bein said i dont think thats your problem.
You may have overgained/boosted your amp into clipping and fried something. Now the task is to find our what. Do u have a buddy with another set of subs you can try? If you are close by i will let you hook up to mine.

OK bass boost is off and did you raise the input sensitivity back to normal? if you didn't it sounds like your running out of power so... give it a desensitizing crank just till it stops

yes that is exactally what is happening....it only last as long as the bass hit comes, no lights come on the green power light is on then dims and goes out
