underpowered subs?
I recently got 2 mtx5500's installed in my car and the amp i got with it from the store is an mtx RFL 300D. After reading about it i found that the amp is 300 watts RMS and each of my subs are both 300 watts RMS. Does this not mean that my subs are being really underpowered with only 150 watts goin to each sub?

If the information that you post is all correct, then yes, each of your subs are only getting 150 wrms.
Are there other RMS ratings for the amp? For example, is the amp 300wrms @ 4 ohms, and 600 wrms @ 2ohms? If yes, and your subs are single voice coil 4 ohm subs, then those to subs wired in parallel will present a 2 ohm load getting 600 watts - or 300 watts each . . . However, based on the model RFL 300D, and from what I know of MTX, that would likely be 300 watts @ 2 ohms. So your subs probably are underpowered.

Forget what malte said hehe.
You are correct in your assessment of power.
Even though they could handle more power, there is nothing wrong with urnning half their rated power unless, of course, you want it to be louder.

By adding an extra identical amp, each amp will then see only half load and instead of 300W @ 2 ohms each amp will push only 200W @ 4 ohms. So this will give him a total of 400w instead of 300w.
So yes it will be louder but, it's not the best solution and they will still be underpowered.

ex:
T5510-04 = 10" single 4ohm voice coil
T5510-44 = 10" dual 4ohm voice coil

A single four ohm voice coil would present a 4 ohm load to an amp. A pair of 4 ohm voice coils wired in series would present an 8 ohm load. The same pair wired in parallel would present a 2 ohm load. This is why it's important to know what sub you have. It gets more complicated when you add another sub. With two subs the load could potentially be 1, 2, 4, 8 or even 16 ohms (8 and 16 are unlikely).
The answer to your origninal post would be that your amp could be delivering anywhere from 50 to ~300 watts total. With more info we could tell you exactly what you've got. My advice is if it's loud enough for you then don't worry about it.
