I have a set of MTX 6001 component speakers being powered from an pioneer 4800 headunit. After about a month of use one of the mid bass speakers blew. I returned them for another set and the same thing happened again. Does anyone know why this has happened twice?

However I see you don't have an amp going to them other then the deck! However Distortion does make a difference.

yup, get an amp. Running them off the head unit is not enough power, 18wrms?), so to get loud your playing them into distortion. That puts DC (clipping) into the speakers which will fry voice coils, both with heat and mechanical problems.

not continually blowing your speakers? that's why they suggested it.
better, cleaner power for better sound and saves the clipping which will save the speakers.

pioneer rated that hu at 50 'peak' watts x 4... IMO it should not be able to let the smoke out of mids rated for 90watts RMS.... even at a disgusting distortion level.....

I have a feeling you got a couple pairs of defective speakers... misalligned coil or more then likley burnt leads....

I would definitely reccomend amping them. I wouldnt trust any factory deck to power a set of components with RMS wattage rated higher than the max output of the deck. your THD @ max volume with like 18-25wrms would be off the charts. Its alot better to overpower a speaker with clean power than it would be to underpower them by alot with dirty deck power.
It would also give you a little more control over the power distribution in your system for appropriate volume matching aswell as frequency tuning.

Would the Rockford punch p450.4 be a suitable amp? Would I also be able to power a sub on this amp to?

why? especially if he is already smoking drivers? read Haunz comment. Deck power is OK not quite good definitely not great but certainly OK



??? this might make sense but I am not sure, at the moment I dont get it

there is something wrong here, probably electrical but it could be defective material. double check the install

r u using stock wiring?... check wires all the way back to deck see if anything is messed up?
