And what kind of power handling requirement will they need? 8 ohm final load per channel?

im using a yamaha m-80 amp, its 2 channel, hence the two sub requirement. i can't remember exactly but its around 400watts rms per channel at 4ohms and is 2 ohm stable.

just checked, its 330watts rms at 4 ohms per channel. distortion is a bit much at 2 ohms so id like to keep it at 4 ohms. a single sub with dual 4 ohm voice coils might do the trick too, although i don't know if thats advisable.

Do you have a budget and a box type in mind?

only in the 300 to 400 range preferably, hence my preference for something pre enjoyed. should the perfect item come along, i may be willing to splurge a bit more.

the box will likely be something of my own design, if i have a slimmer sub, it will be something that will slide under the couch, if not, probably something that will blend in with my furniture, perhaps an end table or something.

box will likely be ported as space isnt a concern, and im looking for nice low frequencies, i need to feel the explosions!

If you are after alot of output and the proven low end performance that it seems you are after, the DD2512 in a slot port box is the way to go for you. Here is the link to one of the most robust drivers you will find. While for SQ there is better, for low end extension and overall output it will leave others in the dust. It is a great combination of the two. DDAudio Digital Designs Speakers Made in the USA

Another one to consider is the stunning Eclipse SW7200 aluminum cone driver. Amazing tonal response and the ability to belt out the lower frequencies. The only issue with the Eclipse is a total lack of warranty for a blown driver. If you abuse it in any way, no warranty support from the Canadian distributor. If you are using your system properly though, this should not be a issue at all.

on a dual 4ohm voice coil, can i run the left channel on the amp to one voice coil and the right channel to the other?

it would seem my amp is a bit low on power for two, and two of either of those subs seems to be a bit more $$ than i wanted (at least brand new), but if i wire it like that i meet both objectives.

okotoks is nice town, although is grown a lot of late!

Overlooked one thing reading your posts. If your amp is stable to 4 ohm stereo, drop a model from the DD2512 and look at the DD1512. Exactly what you are after and much closer to your budget.
