I'm debating the best way to install my two Alpine Type-R 12's into the trunk of my '02 Civic sedan.

Originally I was thinking about making two fiberglass boxes, one for each side of the trunk, to fit snuggly in between the hump of the wheel well and the back end of the car. The subs would be facing each other, or perhaps angled slightly so they're not right in each others path.

My second plan was to ditch the spare tire and again fiberglass an enclosure to fit where the spare goes, and have the two subs on the "floor" of the trunk with grills to protect them, but I don't think I have quite enough volume in the spare tire area for two 12's.

My last option is to build a regular box. I wanted to avoid this because I wanted to keep as much of the trunk usable as possible, but it's starting to look like that won't pan out... So the next question becomes, if I build a new MDF box for this, should I go ported or sealed? I've been kicking around the ported idea, b/c I have an Energy 12" home theater sub at home, and that gets really good acoustic bass, even at low volume levels.

If I do go ported, how do I tune the box properly? The spec sheet for the subs has measurements for box and port sizes, so I guess I could just build one box twice as big and with a dividing wall in the middle?

 

A friend of mine had a box between the wheel well and the taillight. It was a 10 and barely fit. I would not recommend it.

My choice would be to go for the spare tire well. I use packing popcorn to determine the volume of an irregular shape like a tire well and calculate the vent from there.

 

I agree, glass that spare tire area up good and then build up on top of it as needed for the extra airspace.
