Adding poly fill to a box

just finished a FG and mdf box for 2 type R 12's. the box is small, minimum required volume for a sealed box with 2 type r's, i know they can go alot louder than they are with a larger box, port, etc but i simply dont have the room. ive heard that polyfill makes the box appear larger to the sub, i know its worth a try but i wanted to get some feedback from someone whos tried this before. will it make that much of a difference in such a small box (1.7 Cuft i think but dont remember exactly).

any input? worth a shot? how does it work?

It's definitely worth a shot. I just put together a 0.87 cf sealed box for my
12" Type R and I'm thinking of stuffing her full of fuzz. I'll let you know the results.

Use up to 1.5lbs Poly Fill per cubic foot of enclosure space.

Would adding polyfill and making the box seem bigger allow for more bass on the lower end. would my sealed box sound closer to a ported one? Could i make a small ported box, like .75 cubic feet, stuff it with 1 lb of polyfill and have the sub play like it was in a 1.25 cube box?

with that amount of polyfill, your box will virtually be 25-30% larger. Therefore, it'll sound more like a 1cube box. I have 2 Alpine Type R 12's in a sealed 1.7 cube(net) box filled with about 2lbs of poly, and I am very happy with the output and SQ. To give you an idea of what I'm comparing it too; I previously had 3x12" Infinity ref 1230W's in a ported 4cube box stuffed with 4 lbs of poly, and built by 20HZ Audio in Woodbridge(they know their stuff). Both of the systems being powered by the same 1000 watt+ amp, and I can honestly say that I don't miss the monster box. This current set up is almost as loud, and actually sounds better with more types of music...plus i have lots of space for other stuff. Granted these subs are rated higher in terms of power etc.. than the Infinity's that I had, but i think it gives a good idea of what to expect from the small enclosure. Extension is great, I always test my subs with the "tocata in D minor" pipe organ track, and it has not dissappointed. I love ported boxes, but I just didn't have the space, so this worked out better than i anticipated. Note: give the subs a lot of power!!

I know Wal Mart always has it in their "crafts" section. Not that I shop in the craft section
