build new box or modify old one?

my current box is good and all, but it's tuned higher then i want (i think it's at 35hz). is it as simple as changing the tuning lower to make the over all bass sound lower?

either way, i was wondering if someone could design a box or point me in the right direction (website, software) to build a new one. i have 2 M5A 12 -br's so the box must be ported. ideally center port rear facing with the subs as well. or even have 2 separate boxes to make it easier to get in and out of the car.

the max space i have is 32 1/2" width X 22 1/2" depth x 14" height.

specs for the subs;

Outside Diameter - 31.1cm

Mounting Diameter - 27.9cm

Mounting Depth - 16.5cm

Recommended Box Size

40L (1.4 cu. ft.) 30Hz tuning

thanks for the help!

It can be as easy as that...if...the box is the right volume, and the ports can be adjusted easily. If not, then building a new one is the best option. What's the current net volume (after speaker and port displacement) of the box you have? what are the port dimentions(Lxwxh)? Is it a round or slot port?

If you want to build a new box per Mach 5's specs, then one that is 2.8 cubes net with a sufficient port volume to prevent port noise at max rms power would be: 32.5 wide x 14 tall x 19.5 deep using 3/4 mdf (outside measurements). The slot port would measure 12.5 tall x 3 wide x 35 long (internal measurements) and would tune the box to 30 hz. The port velocity at 1600 watts rms would be under 30 m/s, cone excursion would not exceed 22 mm until below 24hz (use a 2nd order infrasonic (12 db/oct high pass filter) at 20hz to prevent any over excursion). Make sure you brace the box internally to minimize flex. This design is for a single slot port on one side of the box, if you want a single port in the middle, it will be harder to build and use more volume meaning the box will have to be larger...and it's a little trickier to calculate, but can be done or you can build two separate ones which will take up more volume as well. Hope that helps

you can plug the port if you want. due to the fact the port entends on each side of the enclosure (L-Port) it might but an odd way of dropping tuning.

any reason you want to be tuned lower?

sorry, the current box is the same as my max limit for trunk space, it's the outside measurements (32 1/2" width X 22 1/2" depth x 14" height)

i don't remember the size of it as it was built for me. it had a center port.

i think i'm just going to scrap the old box, maybe sell it here. i think i'm going to just make 2 single sub boxes to make it easier to get in and out of the car.

here is basically what i was looking at, not sure if it's enough volume though. i was told
You can add about 0.2 cubes for driver displacement. The 1.4 cubes does
not include the port area you plan to use so make sure to factor that in
as well.

Best,
Mark

2 of those will fit within my trunk no problem. though i think i set the wood to 5/8" on that, i'm going to use 3/4".

assuming i understand how boxes work, lowering my tuning to 30hz will make the overall bass produced become lower?

lower the tuning will bring out the 'lows' in your music, but at the same time create a flatter response which will in term make it seem less loud.

i remember building this enclosure for you so that it would be good for a wide range of music that you listen to. i also believe that the enclosure is 1.6 cubic feet per chamber (after port and driver displacement)

the design you show would be alright, but i dont believe there is enough port area.

i don't mind it sounding less loud, but i want it tighter sounding with better response. my old JL audio's sounded great and better then my current setup, just not as loud as i want it.

original enclosure i built

http://www.canadiancaraudio.com/onli...spawn-inc.html

you say you dont mind if its less loud, because you want better response, but then in the same sentence you say its not as loud as you thought it would be....

when designing an enclosure, you need to say to yourself the goials youwant from your system and go from there

my jl's sound great and were at say a level 8/10 for sound quality and the loudness at 5/10. my current setup is at 5/10 for quality and 10/10 for loudness.

i want 8/10 on both. either way, it's only $35 for a sheet of 3/4" MDF so i will attempt some new boxes, and if it doesn't work i've got the one you built me.

here you go Yuli,

sq and loudness is hard to make as one... you almost have to pick either one or the other. i'll be honest, i dont think that lower tuning will help you issue.

sounds silly, but are you still using the stock deck? that might be something thats effecting your sub-stage
