Building New Box

Hey guys,

I currently have a ported box that is 2.5 cubic feet, tuned to 30hz.

I find that it hits a little too low, and doesn't get the higher bass beats. Especially for hip hop music, I'd like it to hit the main beats harder, not the low low bass as much as it does now.

What do you guys recommend for a box? I can go sealed or ported, and ideally, 2 cubic feet or smaller, but if necessary I have room to go bigger.

My current setup is an Ampman/Adire Audio Revolution 1500.1, which powers a Mark II Adire Brahma 12" @ 1ohm.

If I go ported, what frequency do you recommend?
I have little experience with sealed boxes, but anything with a flatter response would be nice.

Try sealing the box first, then maybe adding a few blocks of wood to reduce the volume(smaller boxes tend to give tighter, punchier bass). Also, you may want to re-tune your box for a higher frequency. Anyway, I would try those first, before spending more cash for a box. This way you can find exactly what size gives you the sound you want, before you build a new one.

polyfill, something like one cu.ft. of that will make the box act like it's 1.5x bigger?? I'm not too sure about the accuracy of that one anymore but someone on here will be sure to correct me and get you the for sure specs on it. All i can clearly remember is that if you put polyfill in the enclosure it will react like yo'uve made the box larger.

IMO you need to upgrade your midbass, not change your subwoofer.

LoL - why didn't i think of that. haha. yeah really you don't want subs hitting real real high - that's why they've got speakers to handle that.

I totally agree that I need to upgrade my midbass (which will be done at a later time). However I still think that my sub box is tuned too low @ 30hz, because it hits harder on low background beats than the main beats.

I would assume a box tuned to 35hz would be good, but since I haven't heard one yet, I was getting the opinions of members who might have more experience with them.

Or something similar to that in a sealed setup. I know the smaller sealed boxes are more geared towards SPL and larger are SQ oriented. I just heard that sealed boxes don't hit as hard as ported, but they have tighter bass.

There really isn't much SPL to get from a sealed box. I'm not really into hip-hop but from what I've heard these days it sounds more to be probably even higher than 35hz, maybe more around 40hz. Also, the bigger the box the more SPL you will get, and the smaller the more SQ you will achieve when talking sealed boxes.

Also, sealed boxes will generally be tighter than ported, because the sub is not allowed as much travel. Ported is louder because the sound gets a path out of the box, rather than through the box...

All types of boxes can sound great SQ wise, it all depends on how it's set up with relation to the other parts of your system. As DUKK mentioned, you might want to look at upgrading your midbass( does not necessarily mean changing them). You may just need to up the power going to them, sealing your doors properly, mess around with cross over settings etc...Also, look at your subwoofer cross over settings, infrasonic filter( sometimes a higher setting will get rid of some of that super low rumble, and tighten things up a bit), and again, play with the box, it is yours. Try sealing it(temporarily by blocking the port with a plug of some sort), adding fibre fill( 1 pound per cube will give you an effective size increase of about 25%, up to a certain box size), add solid wood blocks to make the internal volume smaller. Listen to each set up critically with the type of music you like, and keep trying until you find what you want. It took me a few months of trial and error to get things pretty good. Unfortunately (or fortunately), it's never over. Good luck!

03rejo - on the papers that came with the Adire Brahma sub, it says that an "SPL sealed" setup would be 0.75cf, while an "SQ sealed" setup would be 1cf in volume. Thats why I thought the smaller boxes were more SPL oriented. Which way is it?

Veeman, I think that would be a great idea, only that I cannot hack up the current box that I have. I will be making a new one, but this box will be used later on as well.

Also, I dont want to be misunderstood, its not that I don't like the super low bass, because I do, but I just don't want to sacrifice the main bass in songs for it. I heard my friend's setup which he thinks is tuned to 40hz, and although it hit really hard, it didn't hit the lower bass that well. Would you say it would be a good equilibrium to tune to 35 hz? It would be good if I could actually hear the setup before building a box...but I don't know many people with systems in their car.
