I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this box design.
DECWARE's Death Box II - High Output Subwoofer

This is what I have from more than half of a 3/4" sheet of mdf.
The port is a bit shifted, this is my fault because I glued that panel on backwards. Whoops.

How would you attach wiring to this box?

I was thinking hot glue.

You know what, I was pondering these boxes for a long time! Please tell us your results, if you have a mic and what not(access to one that is). Thanks.

I'd also be very curious on the results as I'll be building a new box very soon.

I am on a tight budget. I didn't do much research on audiobahn, I just went of word of mouth, and got a little hypnotized by the shiny chrome. I have a feeling I will be selling this box with the sub and amp and building a new one.

^ works that well eh? :retard:

Still haven't answerd the question though.... how does it sound?

Ignore the other people knocking A-Bahn.. if it's all you can afford then there's no reason to ditch the whole setup.

If it sounds good then you've got no worries.. if it sounds like crap... ask Dukk how to build an ABC box :smilie_da

Never seen that design before, how does it work, where does the woofer go, and whats the cut out for at the other end

matt_p 10-16-2006 04:46 PM

wow... extremely intresting...wouldnt mind getting them plans but since ill probably never get around to building one of them i mite as well not spend the 10 bucks haha.......did you buy the plans from the site? and were they easy to follow? and yea how does it sound!! lol

Ok, I just got home. Today I installed 4g to the amp, mounted it to the box and hooked up the speaker level inputs (couldn't wait for the deck that is in the mail). I looped the power and remote together with a switch between them, so for a couple days I will have to turn the amp off from the trunk.

How does it sound? Well with my am/fm radio and an fm transmitter from my ipod, it is rather boomy. I have the gain all the way down, the crossover at 50hz and the subsonic filter on. I haven't tuned the box yet, waiting for my Pioneer HU. My stock radio makes the bass very loud, but not tight. I drove around for an hour or so today listening, and I have to say that rap sounds very good. I don't listen to much rap though and on kick drums it sucks. I have a feeling that the crossover is too low to play the fast kicks on say Overkill by Metallica. Pink Floyd was rather disappointing, not enough ambient bass on Welcome to the Machine.

I chose this sub because it is very efficient (92.5dB), the reviews said this box made efficient and even very cheap subs sound good and low.

I did buy the plans from Decware. Steve's plans are very easy to follow. You just need a good glue like gorilla glue, I used half a bottle. And I wouldn't attempt to build this box unless you have a table saw, a belt sander, and lots of patience. Everything has to fit together just right, and the insert with the woofer has to be airtight. Well worth the $10 though.

The lid goes on top to make a sealed chamber. The cutout forms part of the port, with the insert making up the rest. To tune the box I have to slide the insert up and down to find the right balance.

Sorry for the horrible pic, it's from a camera phone. Bonus points for whoever identifies the reflection on the amp.

Reflection looks like a Rubbermaid garbage can with something red sitting on it???

Let us know once you get your new deck and get it tuned:D:D:D

Hey Sunfire, I don't know if you've already lost interest in the box or not, but have you tried running the magnet side toward the port? Also most people have said they run the insert about 1.5-1.75" from the port. Another thing is their x over is set around 60-75 hz. Don't forget to round off the port edges with sandpaper as well. And load the sub toward a corner if possible.
I've just been reading quite a bit in that forum since you brought this topic up. It sounds like most who build the box are dissappointed their first time running it but get quite impressed once they've got the right tuning. Could also be a bunch of B.S.
I bought the $20 plans last night for something to do. Might be fun. Hopefully it's not just a boomy, one note wonder. Keep us posted if you do anymore tweaking.

20Sunfire05 10-17-2006 05:18 PM

Bonus points go to cav2nv420, it is a (husky) shopvac.

I have the day off today, so I was playing with different insert positions. About an inch above the port seems nice and tight. I still have the crossover tuned to 50Hz and the gain all the way down. Next step it to tune the crossover then see if the box still sounds good. I still don't have my HU so all of this tuning is temporary. The deck may change everything, but I think it will be pretty close.

One song in particular stands out today after tuning. Take it down low- capone/dillinja has tons of low low bass. It seems the lower this box plays the stronger it feels. I hate having to refer to all these songs that not many have heard before, can anyone direct me to a frequency sweep/separate frequency tracks?

So far I am very happy with this box. I recently installed a pioneer 10" with roughly the same power in a sealed box in a hatchback for a friend. It doesn't even compare. The low end and output of my box blows it out of the water. Can't wait to turn up the gain a little, must have patience.

I'm off for an other drive (half deaf neighbor who can only hear bass).

20Sunfire05 10-19-2006 02:57 AM

Alright, I just got home from work. My HU was on the table and I didn't want to wait. In total darkness with the dome light and a flash light I managed to easliy install it. I omitted the rear speakers and will eventually take them out. Should I leave the holes open or cover them up? Or leave the 6X9s in there working as a passive radiator of sorts?

I haven't touched the tuning from the crappy radio and it sounded much better at low volumes. I turned it up to around full power, 4v on this hu, makes about half power on the amp which is rated for 8V max. It started to get boomy again. Then, after staring it down for a while, I realized that I had neglected to fill in the hole with the speaker wire. So tommorow I will fill it in and make it warm in the trunk so the RTV dries. No sub till about noon.

This box is exceeding my expectations and it's a fun project as well.:smilie_da

Double kick drums are felt in the chest. I have been listening to lots of metal tonight. About 50/62 on the deck is just right for Iced Earth live in Athens, I have never enjoyed a live recording like this before. I never knew this album had double kicks and bass guitar.

20Sunfire05 10-23-2006 11:02 PM

So I think I tuned the box to where I want it. I set the gain on the amp conservatively, crossover at 80Hz, and -3 on the deck. I let a couple friends listen to it without telling them what I had in the trunk. After 5 minutes with a deep bass tester they both guessed at least 2 12" or maybe a 15" with 800 or so watts. You should have seen the look on their face when I opened the trunk. It plays amazingly low, especially considering it is excurtion limited and a cheap made in China speaker. I have a 400 watt mono amp playing it.

Installed pics to come once I get new batteries for my camera.

Glad to hear everything is working out for you... :smilie_da
