Post inside boxs..

hi, i heard somewhere, correct me if im wrong, that when you make a sb box with MDF, that by applying some minwax or some kinda sealer or something i dont know exactly, that it may help. it read that since the MDF is porous it smoothes and fills the pores. not sure if this is true or not. anyway, if you laugh, i didnt make this up, its hearsay! haha

I don't know about using minwax, but your best bet is to use some sort of sealant along the edges (silicone or whatever)

If you want to make sure it's sealed really well you could use fiberglass resin on the inside.

fiberglass resin works great!

although i have done other things like tiles, boxes made out of cement, solid 1/2 inch steel plate, oak, pine, mahogany, and lots of other stuff... it's all fun, and quite neat to find the diff in sound in the materials.

Well, I've read that since MDF is porous, you're supposed to seal the outer walls of your box. But I personally can't see it affecting performance very much...

i have used a heavy undercoating inside boxes. i have also seen people use the spray dampening from dynamt inside boxes. i once had a guy claim that with most mdf he could put a dust vac down on the surface of a piece of 1/2 mdf and you could feel air being sucked through from the other side. i thought he was talking alot of bs.

I've actually seen spl increases in my own boxes and in FX Audio's Ext 1 vehicle.
there is definitely a reason us spl'ers spend the extra time doing this...IT WORKS

I agree with Dukk, wood is not porous enough to affect performance of a woofer, applying a sealant inside the cabinet will make the walls more reflective, or less depending on the material used.
