Kicker L7 ...reg cab fiberglass... SQ?

Exactly, key is in the build, if you can fit it, its a tough sub to beat for ANY kind of music.....as with most JL stuff its expensive, but theres a few deals on them currently.

yes JL is a tad expensive but i may just have to spend the extra dollar i guess......What would be the next step down from JL?
ok now this is going to sound stupid and im sure there would be a difference between the 2 boxes performance but how big of a difference?
i would think the flare box would be maybe going from 11" to 8-9" in a distance of 3-4". I think this would really restrict movement of air, sorta like using a funnel. Am i right? Does it really make a huge difference with air movement and bass?
i would HAVE to do the flare to fit a 10" woofer, and 8" i might have to a little.

The Kicker 8" L7 might be the route to go for you.
With a recommended max. sealed volume of .75 cuft, you should be able to fit it in no problem. Even ported it only takes 1.0 cuft., and if you can feed it 4-500 watts rms you should get plenty of bottom end.
Maybe not a cheap alternative, but if you want decent sound a cheap sub is not the route to go.

I second the choice of the 8L7 as a great 8" woofer that is not totally out there in price. Still, I'd look at the 10.
As for the flared box - unless you really restrict the airflow, the woofer is not going to care about the shape. Have you thought to maybe flip that woofer around so the magnet is hanging out? Could solve a bunch of fitment problems.

hmmm yea, i didnt think about that.... yea im going to try for the 10 over the 8 but if i cant fit a 10 i guess im suck with an 8.

kicker is more spl. as jl has great sq. i have two kicker L-5's and wouldnt trade them for any thing other then L-7's but i like spl id go for the w-7 from jl for what you want but uncertain of the 8" one i dont think its that much of a strong sub tho

I have heard the 8" L7 in a high end SQ setup (F#1 HU, F#1 speakers), and it did very well. I think from an SQ point of view there might be better but the L7 can hang... but dont be afraid to check out other drivers in the 8 and 10 inch range (JL W3, Alpine X come to mind but there are dozens) I generally dont say too much about sub-woofer SQ because almost any sub can be used to produce good to great SQ if operated in the correct band. Some woofers have bigger linear operating bands and more flexibility will help with the blending with your mid-bass, also the 'speed' the woofer (I prefer the term dynamics) is important.

Okay I compleatly agree in the fact that you can take any driver and tune it to be sound quality.
At the same time why not do that to a driver thats ment more towards SQ if thats the route your going with. Personaly I wouldent be going witha L7 for your setup (yet I havent herd a 8L7) all the other L7's realy reach potential once you go ported.
Have you looked into the "10" PG RSD"
I'm more on ROE and ca.com and the guys on there just RANT about this sub(I see alot of Rock guys liking the sub) I'd consider it close to best SQ for $$$.
There ment for seald and sound great tight fast responsive driver it's rated 500rms some guys are putting 800 to it daily no issues. I'd recommend a solid 600Rms to be safe.
That sub in a well tunned box, would be solid for what your looking for.
