need help with a slotted box design

I got a 10" Alpine Type R and want to build a new box to experiment. I was thinking of building a slotted box. And also I am constrained for space. the box can be about 13' height, 15-16' length and maybe 13-14' max width. The slot would be on the side and the sub I guess in the same side. The volume of the box with the constraints would be about 1 cu.ft. So how wide and long the slot should be? any other suggestions?

Check out alpine-usa.com and download sub owners manual.

appreciate your response of course but your comment is no help whatsoever. Alpine do not include such information in their manuals. I read the manual when I bought the sub. They don't even specify anything about ported enclosures in that manual. I had to refer to all the specifications and model the box in Winisd. Once you sit down and learn how to use that program everything starts to make sense. Anyway... I built a box with a round port instead of a slot. 13"x13"x16" with 3" x 9" port, inside volume is about 1.1cu.ft, so it's tuned to about 40-41Hz. If I make the port longer, say 12" the tuning frequency will be 35Hz. I can experiment later with this as the port is not glued in or anything.

The sub sounds better, louder and cleaner but not to the point where I could see a dramatic difference but still I would say it is an improvement over the sealed sonotube I have. Sonotube looks cooler though

I remember however when I bought my first fosgate sub it had all the box building dimensions and instructions. Alpine should provide this kind of info.

If you are still interested, here are the Alpine site suggestions (Owner's Manual)
-External box Dimensions: 12.5"x14.5"x17.25" (using 3/4 MDF)
-Gross internal Vol.: 1.3 cu. ft.
-Vent opening: 11"x1" (11 sq. in.)
-Vent length: 22"
-Vent displacement: .237 cu. ft.
-Net internal Vol.: 1 cu. ft.

I think this enclosure is tuned around 35Hz (haven't done the calculations).
If you have already built a box, I would tune it to around 35Hz, unless you are going for a more SPL than SQ. If it were me, I would change yor current port length to 12". Also, when building an enclosure it is important to brace it well.

J.

I dunno man, I looked at the manuals again and cannot see where you found those specs. Can you give me a link to this info? I'm just curious.

And also what kind of difference would I hear by extending the port another 3 inches and lowering the tuning frequency to 35Hz instead of 40Hz?

And also now that I drove around with this box for a couple days now I can surely say that the bass sounds awesome with the ported box. Definitely better SQ, more impact, more clarity, better response, gets louder.
