Please Help with Box dimensions

I have just purchased two 12" 1200 Watt Kaption SPL series subs. It came with a d.700-1 amp and a Kaption 1.0 Farad Capacitor. I am looking to build a box for each sub and I have no clue where to start. I need to know the box dimensions and the port dimensions. All I know is that using 3/4 inch Medium Density Fibreboard and from there I am lost. Any help would be appreciated.

first you'll need the model number off the sub's, then goto the kaption website and get the owners manual or spec's for the woofer's.( might want to get the manual for the amp too, just so you know the spec's of it) in the manual it should show the minimum and maximum reccomended box size and port size for your sub's. if your building one box for 2 subs you'll need 2 ports the same size. the length of your port determines frequency, so the manufacturer probabally will recomend 35 or 40 htz.( which is perfect for daily drivers) so measure your trunk fo space, then draw a box on paper wth the dimensions you'd LIKE to use, then type them into the spaces on that site. now refer to the cubic feet reccomended by the manual. start adding or subtracting dimensions till you get real close to what you need. remember you'll need to add ports to this after, so you'll want to mount it on the same side as the sub face. go out to home depot and get wood glue and FLOORING screws. they have 2 sets of different size threads on the screw, you'll see what i'm talking about when you get them.

If you are comfortable with building a slot port RE Audio has a good box calculator. You can input all your dimensions to get ideal enclosure volume and proper port tuning. Then it will give you all the proper cut measurements.

i've used that calc. @ RE it works good. i also wanted to mention if you get all your cut's figured out, the guy's ( or girl's) at home depot or lowes will make every cut for you for 25 cent's each, and i believe the first 2 cut's for free. it'll cost under 3 dollars just to have it cut and all you have to do is glue, screw, and cut a couple holes!!!

Let me help a bit with the non tech part for now.

Cubic feet, or volume, is the internal size of the subwoofer enclosure that is recommended by the manufacruer. The sub will "sound best" in that size, or as close as possible. Cubic feet will be different for different TYPES of enclosures.

Enclosure type: Lets just talk about 2 for now. Sealed and Ported. Sealed is referring to a closed box that has no VENTS or PORTS (holes more or less). In general the cubic foot requirement will be lower than ported (smaller size box possible). Bass will be fairly tight, fairly clean, not much "rumble". Easy to build, cheap to buy, BUT you will get less volume (not much usually) with a sealed box because the air inside acts like a spring on the sub, forcing it to work harder at a given excursion (how much the cone moves in and out total).

Ported Are those encloseres that have "holes" in them called ports or vents. The vents can be round, square, rectangle, whatever. Cubic foot requirement will usually be LARGER than a sealed box. They must be TUNED to a frequency your sub is happy with. The tuning is done by playing with port lenth, size, etc. Ported boxs offer more output than sealed boxs, BUT they can have a "rumbly" type sound or even port noise (air swishing past the port) to them. Con is they are harder to build, or more complex I should say, harder to tune, and you can flap your subs into the next world if you screw up. Plus is they offer more output per watt because of design, and the woofer does not have to fight the air resistance like a sealed box.

To be continued if you want, fingers tired
